State College Spikes News Release

BATAVIA, N.Y. - Jim Voyles, Hector Villalobos, Will Changarotty and Kevin Hamman combined on a five-hit shutout as the State College Spikes notched their third shutout of the year and captured their second consecutive series victory with a 3-0 win over the Batavia Muckdogs on Monday night at Dwyer Stadium.

Voyles (2-1) began the effort with five-plus innings of work in which he yielded three hits and three walks while striking out five batters to earn credit for the win.

In the sixth inning, after Voyles allowed hits to the first two batters, Villalobos entered the game for his second Spikes (10-14) appearance. The lefty gave up a hit to load the bases, but bounced back to record three consecutive strikeouts and end the Muckdogs (11-12) threat.

In the seventh, Villalobos ran into trouble after walking the first three batters of the frame, and so was lifted for Changarotty, who struck out three straight batters with the bases loaded to douse another Batavia threat.

Changarotty then yielded one hit in the eighth before giving way to Hamman (3), who earned his third save in as many opportunities with a perfect ninth inning.

Andres Luna gave State College the lead with a two-out RBI single in the second. Stanley Espinal then contributed a two-run single to center in the sixth to increase the Spikes' advantage.

Luna, Edwin Figuera and Justin Toerner each produced multiple-hit games for State College. Brady Whalen drew three walks in the game, just one shy of a Spikes single-game record.

Batavia starter Bryce Howe (0-1) drew the loss after allowing one run on five hits and two walks while striking out two batters over three innings.

The Spikes earned their second straight series win on the road, taking two out of three at Dwyer Stadium after doing the same against Auburn to begin the six-game road trip.

Following an off day on the New York-Penn League schedule on Tuesday, the Spikes return home to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Wednesday to begin a six-game homestand with a 7:05 p.m. matchup against the Vermont Lake Monsters (Oakland Athletics).
