West Virginia Black Bears News Release

Granville, W. Va. - Despite another comeback in the late innings, the West Virginia Black Bears fall to the Auburn Doubledays 7-6.

The Black Bears picked up a series win in the first series against the Williamsport Crosscutters, but dropped this series to the Doubledays with one win and two losses.

Auburn got on the board first in the series finale. An RBI groundout in the second inning and a home run in the top of the fourth gave the Doubledays an early 2-0 lead.

West Virginia cut the Auburn lead in half in the bottom of the fourth inning. After 1B Luke Mangieri doubled down the first base field line and advanced to third on a groundout, SS Connor Kaiser hit a sac-fly to centerfield to give the home team its first run of the ballgame.

The Doubledays responded quickly, scoring three runs between the fifth and sixth innings, putting the Black Bears in a 5-1 hole.

Then in the bottom of the sixth, West Virginia came roaring back. With the bases loaded, 2B Robbie Glendinning blasted a bases-clearing triple into right field to put the Black Bears down one run.

In the next two innings, P Logan Stoelke shut down the Auburn offense. Usually the closer for West Virginia, the righty threw a pair of scoreless frames, allowing only one hit while striking out three batters.

The Black Bears came all the way back to tie the game in the eighth inning. With runners on first and second, 3B Raul Siri blooped a ground-rule double that spun over the fence in foul territory to knot the game at 5-5.

The Doubledays retook the lead in the top of the ninth inning on an RBI double to left field, giving the visitors a 6-5 advantage with a half-inning left to play.

Unable to come back again the bottom of the ninth, West Virginia falls to 10-14 on the season, picking up three wins during the six-game homestand.

After an off day tomorrow, the Black Bears head on the road to begin a series against the Hudson Valley Renegades. First pitch for Wednesday's game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
