State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA- The State College Spikes rebounded from losing a two-run lead in the top of the eighth inning to score three in the bottom half and defeat the Williamsport Crosscutters, 5-2, in a SawBuck Series matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Friday.
Aaron Baker led the offensive attack for State College (34-33) with an RBI triple in the sixth inning and a sacrifice fly to break a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning. Baker's triple was his sixth of the season, tying him with teammate Pat Irvine and two other players for the New York-Penn League lead.
Irvine's run-scoring single in the eighth inning gave him his 39th run batted in on the season, tying him with Sebastian Valle of Williamsport (36-31) for third place on the NYPL RBI list.
Spikes starter Kyle McPherson went six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and a walk while setting a season-high for any State College pitcher with eight strikeouts in the game. McPherson did not, however, factor in the decision.
Mike Williams (3-2) picked up the victory for State College with two innings of relief, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits. Marc Baca (6) remained perfect in save opportunities on the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
Siulman LeBron (4-5) went 7-2/3 innings, but took the loss for the Crosscutters after allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five. The game took place after a 92-minute rain delay in front of 3,923 fans at the ballpark.
Saturday, the Spikes and Crosscutters meet for a special 1 p.m. matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park in the Spikes' next-to-last home game of the 2009 regular season. State College will send left-hander Michael Felix (0-1) out to face Williamsport left-hander Korey Noles (2-2).
