July 29, 2021 - Major League Baseball Draft League (MLBDL)
State College Spikes News Release
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Hylan Hall smashed his third homer of the Major League Baseball Draft League season, and the State College Spikes added four more stolen bases to their team record total, but the Trenton Thunder strung together some crooked numbers to take an 18-4 decision on Thursday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Hall took a 1-1 pitch from Trenton (26-13-5) starter Mitchell Verberg 397 feet to left-center field for a solo shot in the third, drawing the Spikes (22-27-1) within 4-2. The Wabash Valley (Ind.) College product, who is headed to Washington State in the fall, has knocked in 17 runs over 30 games in the MLB Draft League.
The Spikes also picked up steals 110 through 113 of the season in the club's 50th game of the year, with Zacchaeus Rasberry, Lukas Cook, Cameron Lee and Michael Slaten taking a bag apiece.
Despite the highlights, the Thunder was able to put together three frames of four runs or more, with Luis Vargas leading the way. Vargas delivered the second two-homer game of the MLB Draft League season, smashing a three-run homer in the fourth and following with a two-run dinger that traveled 452 feet in the sixth.
Jonny Weaver also produced a big game for Trenton with three runs batted in as part of a 4-for-5 night. Ryan Guckin added three RBI and a double to aid the Thunder's offenseive cause.
Spikes starter Jason Alvarez (0-2) took the loss after being charged with nine runs on 10 hits over five innings of work. Alvarez, who had entered the game allowing just one run and four hits over his previous nine frames, hit one batter and struck out four in the effort.
Trenton reliever Jalen Daniels (1-0) was credited with the win after retiring six of the seven batters he faced and allowing only a hit batsman over two innings.
The Spikes will now hit the road for three straight games against the Williamsport Crosscutters at Muncy Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field this weekend. The series begins with a 7:05 p.m. matchup on Friday. Right-hander Louis Davenport III (2-2) is scheduled to make his eight start, and tenth appearance, of the season for State College.
Following the series in Williamsport, an off day on Monday, and a three-game road series against the Thunder, the Spikes will come back home on Friday, August 6 for a three-game set against the Crosscutters that starts the final five home games of the 2021 schedule.
