State College Spikes News Release

FREDERICK, Md.- The State College Spikes broke open a 3-3 tie with a seven-run fourth inning and never looked back, posting 19 hits as a team in a 12-3 win over the Frederick Keys on Saturday night at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium.

All seven of the Spikes' (15-15 2ndHalf) runs in the fourth scored with two outs, starting with Carlos Contreras's bases-loaded single to right field. Luis Aviles then cleared the bases with a triple off the right-field wall, with a wild pitch plating him shortly thereafter. Brennan Dorighire started the surge with a walk, followed by Josh Leslie's double and Braedon Blackford's RBI infield single to plate Dorighi. Leslie also scored on an error coinciding with Blackford's single.

The Spikes' offense bolstered starting pitcher Derrick Cherry(4-3), who produced quite a turnaround on the mound. Cherry's first nine pitches, and 14 of his first 20, all missed the zone, contributing to a pair of first-inning runs for the Keys (12-14 2ndHalf).

However, the right-hander got out of that inning with only those two runs against him, then proceeded to give up only three runs on four hits and four walks over five innings of work to earn the win. Cherry notched three strikeouts over 85 pitches, with a total of 48 strikes.

Five different Spikes collected three hits in the game. Leslie went 3-for-5 with two doubles, while Payton Harden went 3-for-4 with a double to join Contreras, Dorighi and Blackford in the club. Zac Vooletich recorded two hits, both of them doubles, while Aviles knocked in a total of four runs on the night.

Frederick starter Walker Zander(0-1) took the loss after being charged with 10 runs, nine of them earned, on 11 hits and three walks over 3 2/3 innings.

Sunday, the Spikes will complete their three-game series against the Keys with a 1:00 p.m. rubber match at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium. Left-hander Jacob Myer (0-0) is scheduled to make his sixth start and eighth overall appearance for the Spikes, while Frederick will send either right-hander Albert Cuello-Batista (1-0) or left-hander Mason Philley (2-3) out to the hill.

Following the three-game sets at Frederick this weekend and Trenton next week, the Spikes will come back home on Friday, August 18 to start a weekend series against West Virginia.
