Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY â The American Hockey League announced today that Binghamton Senators center Jason Spezza has been named the CCM Vector/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending December 26, 2004. In two games, Spezza recorded two goals and three assists to help the Senators to pair of convincing victories.
Binghamton had two games on the schedule during the abbreviated Christmas week, both on home ice against the East Division rival Albany River Rats. On Wednesday night, Spezza found the net for the first time in 11 games, scoring two power-play goals to help the Senators cruise to an 8-2 win. Then in Sunday's rematch, he registered three assists as Binghamton beat the River Rats, 6-2.
In recognition of his achievement, Spezza will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Senators home game.
The award is the first weekly honor in Senators franchise history. In the club's inaugural season in 2002-03, Spezza and Antoine Vermette both were chosen as the AHL's Rookie of the Month in January and March respectively.
A native of Mississauga, Ont., the 21-year-old Spezza ranks third in the American Hockey League in scoring with 43 points, including a league-high 32 assists, in 33 games played. He now has 33 goals and 64 assists for 97 points in 76 career AHL games with Binghamton. Spezza, the second overall pick in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft and an AHL All-Star and an AHL All-Rookie Team selection in 2003, picked up 22 goals and 33 assists in 78 NHL contests with Ottawa last season.
Other nominees for CCM Vector/AHL Player of the Week include Bridgeport center Blaine Down, Chicago center Lonny Bohonos, Cincinnati left wing Chris Kunitz, Cleveland defenseman Christian Ehrhoff, Hamilton forward Steve Ott, Hershey goaltender Peter Budaj, Houston center Mikko Koivu, Manchester center Yanick Lehoux, Portland goaltender Maxime Ouellet, Rochester center Paul Gaustad, San Antonio forward Ryan Jardine, Springfield right wing Andre Deveaux, Syracuse forward Chris Ferraro and Utah left wing Jeff Taffe.
