Carolina Mudcats News Release
Salem, Va. - Brandon Jacobs belted a long home run out over left to cap a late-innings rally by the Salem Red Sox in a 7-5 victory over the Carolina Mudcats Saturday night at LewisGale Field. The ninth inning shot was Jacobs' 10th of the year, and earned the Red Sox their second straight walk-off win over Carolina.
Carolina (2-7, 24-55) lost their fourth straight game, and their 31st of the year by two runs or fewer. Salem clinches the series en route to improving to 6-3, 39-40 overall.
Matt Price (3-0) earns the win after pitching out of trouble in the ninth. The right-hander walked two, and struck out a pair. Louis Head (0-1) was left with the loss in his debut, surrendering the game winner with two out in the ninth.
The Mudcats built a 5-2 advantage before Salem's rally. Tyler Naquin doubled to lead off the game, and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Joey Wendle.
Trailing 2-1 in the sixth, the Mudcats loaded the bases on singles from Francisco Lindor and Wendle. Jerrud Sabourin reached on a fielding error by second baseman Nick Natoli. Jordan Smith singled to tie the score 2-2, and Bo Greenwell put Carolina out front with sac-fly to center. Tony Wolters singled on a grounder through the right side, and Sabourin beat the throw for a 4-2 score.
Wendle padded the lead with a solo shot to left, his ninth of the season, in the seventh inning.
The Red Sox rallied for three in the last of the seventh of Grant Sides. With two on, Keury De La Cruz drove in one with a double. A wild pitch plated Deven Marrero for a 5-4 score. Blake Swihart capped the rally with a sacrifice fly to left.
