Winston-Salem Dash News Release
FREDERICK, MD - Michael Ohlman's three-run blast culminated a five-run ninth for the Frederick Keys, who stunned Winston-Salem 9-7 on Saturday night at Harry Grove Stadium.
The Dash (5-4, 43-36) entered the last of the ninth with a three-run lead, but four consecutive Frederick (4-5, 38-40) runners reached against Max Peterson (1-4). Thus, Jason Van Skike was summoned out of the bullpen with a two-run lead and the bases loaded.
A fielder's choice pulled the Keys within one, but another fielder's choice off the bat of Nicky Delmonico resulted in an out at the plate. With men at the corners and Frederick down to its final strike, Ohlman clubbed his sixth homer of the season beyond the center field wall to send the Dash to their first loss when leading after eight innings this season.
Winston took a 4-3 lead in the seventh thanks to a Jeremy Farrell fielder's choice, and the Dash added an insurance run in the eighth when David Herbek snuck his second homer of the week and the season inside the left field foul pole.
After Frederick pulled within one in the home half of the eighth, the Dash plated a pair in the top of the ninth thanks to run-producing singles by Rangel Ravelo and Josh Richmond.
The Keys' late-inning magic spoiled Chris Bassitt's team high-tying ninth quality start. Bassitt allowed three runs and struck out a career-high 10 Keys, which is one shy of a single-game record in the Dash era (2009-present). Hector Santiago struck out 11 Kinston Indians on April 16, 2011.
Both teams scored three times in the fifth following four scoreless innings for each side. The Dash led off the top of the fifth with consecutive singles. Two batters later, Kevan Smith brought home Winston's first run with a fielder's choice. Following a Farrell double, Ravelo drove home both Smith and Farrell with a two-out single.
However, the Keys struck with a trio of runs in the last of the fifth. Sammie Starr doubled home Frederick's first run of the evening, and Jerome Pena capped the big frame with a two-run blast, his ninth of the season.
Winston-Salem tries for a series victory Sunday at 6 p.m. from Maryland. The Dash send All-Star Chris Beck (6-8, 3.13 ERA) to the bump against fellow righty Luc Rennie (1-0, 0.00 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. on wsdash.com.
The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark for the Fourth of July on Thursday night at 7. Fans will enjoy an extended fireworks display after the game, presented by WilcoHess. The Fourth of July game kicks off an eight-game homestand, and fans can get their tickets by calling (336) 714-2287 or visiting wsdash.com.
