Salem Red Sox News Release
SALEM, VA - The Salem Red Sox saw their bats go quiet down the stretch Saturday night and squandered a late bases-loaded opportunity, taking a 7-3 loss at the hands of the Potomac Nationals at Haley Toyota Field.
Salem (15-14, 46-49) lost their second game in a row and failed to keep pace in the second-half race in the Northern Division. Potomac (12-16, 49-46) rolled up 12 hits and seven walks, and scored their third consecutive win. Roldani Baldwin smashed a two-run homer for the Sox, his first round-tripper since May 31 against Potomac.
Salem struck first in the bottom of the second inning against Potomac starting pitcher Wil Crowe (W, 10-0), who plunked Michael Osinski with two outs. Victor Acosta slashed a double to the gap in left-center field, plating Osinski and putting the Sox in front 1-0.
The P-Nats answered in the top of the third against Sox starter Kevin McAvoy (L, 0-1), who walked leadoff man Jack Sundberg and allowed a single to Telmito Agustin to put runners at first and second with nobody out. A double steal advanced the runners to second and third, and Bryan Mejia brought Sundberg home with an RBI groundout to tie the game at 1-1.
Potomac opened up a lead in the top of the fourth. With one out, Tres Barrera singled and Aldrem Corredor doubled to put runners at second and third, and Rhett Wiseman knocked them both home with a double to right before scoring on an RBI single by Sundberg. Agustin singled and Edwin Lora walked to load the bases, but Algenis Martinez entered to get Mejia to pop out and fan Luis Garcia, ending the inning with Salem trailing 4-1.
The Sox drew closer in the bottom of the fourth. Bobby Dalbec earned a one-out walk from Crowe, and Baldwin battered a two-run homer high over the left-field wall. The dinger was Baldwin's seventh of the year, and it cut the margin to 4-3.
The P-Nats responded in force in the top of the fifth inning. Barrera reached on a one-out single and moved up to second when Martinez balked. Corredor singled to score Barrera, and came in on a two-out double by Sundberg. Agustin added an RBI single of his own to run Potomac's lead to 7-3. The Sox loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Brett Netzer bounced into an inning-ending double play to quell the threat.
McAvoy was rocked for four runs on seven hits and two walks over 3.1 innings, fanning five. Martinez allowed three runs on five hits and a walk in 3.2 innings, striking out two. Jared Oliver walked four batters in two scoreless innings of relief.
The Sox will look to snap out of their funk Sunday afternoon, with righty Jake Thompson taking the ball for Salem against Potomac. First pitch at Haley Toyota Field is scheduled for 6:05 p.m., and the pregame show with Ben Gellman and Suzie Cool begins at 5:45 p.m. on the Red Sox broadcast network.
