EL PASO, TX - The Amarillo Sox trailed on Tuesday night 9-2, but the Sox scored seven runs in the sixth inning to tie the game. Unfortunately, the El Paso Diablos rebounded and defeated the Sox 10-9 at Cohen Stadium.
Sox reliever Wes Littleton (2-2) got the loss, allowing the go-ahead run in the eighth inning. Diablos reliever Kyle Cremers (1-1) got the win, in pitching a scoreless eighth inning. El Paso closer Marcel Prado finished off Amarillo in the ninth for his second save of the season.
El Paso took a quick first inning lead with five runs on five hits and an error. Tim Alberts got Amarillo on the board in the third on an RBI double for a 5-1 Sox deficit.
The Diablos added three more in the third and one in the fifth, while the Sox scored on on a Jake Opitz solo homer in the fifth for a 9-2 score.
Then came the sixth inning. Van Pope flew out to begin the inning, but the next six Sox batters all received base hits. With a runner at first an five runs already across, Opitz hit a groundball that should have been an inning ending double play, but was mishandled for an error to keep both runners on base. Alberts followed with a triple to score both runners and tie the game with a seven-run inning and a 9-9 score.
El Paso came back with a double in the eighth by Jonathan Cisneros, who would score on a Patrick Arlis RBI triple for a 10-9 Diablos lead.
Amarillo was able to get a runner on base in the ninth, but the Sox couldn't push him across to fall to El Paso 10-9
With the loss, the Sox fall to 14-11 while the Diablos improve to 6-19. Wednesday, Amarillo will take on El Paso for the final game of the three-game set at 8:05pm. The game can be heard by visiting www.diablos.com. Game time is tentative and is subject to blackout.
