Sox Pull Even With Albuquerque with 9th Inning Win

August 24, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

Willie Morales hit a solo hom run in the top of the 9th inning, his second of the game, to break a 5-5 tie and give the Sky Sox a 6-5 win over the Omaha Royals at Rosenblatt Stadium. With the victory, the Sox pull back to even with Albuquerque in first place of the PCL's Central Division, as the Isotopes lost to the Iowa Cubs, 3-2. Sox starter Chris Gissell pitched a solid performance, allowing just 3 hits and 3 runs (all earned) in 7 innings of work before giving way to reliever Matt Whiteside. Whiteside picked up his third victory of the season despite a less-than-stellar performance, and Brad Clontz came on to save the 9th and extend his Sky Sox single season saves record to 29. Morales, Mark Sweeney (3-5, HR, RBI, R) and Wendell Magee (3-4, 2 RBI, R) carried the Sox offense. Colorado Springs now heads to Iowa to begin a 5-game series with the Iowa Cubs. In game one of the series, Scott Elarton (6-6, 5.55) will take the mound for the Sox against the Cubs' Juan Cruz (4-0, 2 .03)
