Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Sometimes, all it takes is one lucky bounce.
The Portland Beavers got one Saturday night in their 8-6 win over the Edmonton Trappers, scoring the go-ahead run in the seventh inning when Tagg Bozied's single took a funny hop on the turf and rolled all the way to the right-field wall.
Bozied's hit capped an impressive come-from-behind victory for the Beavers, who won their third straight game in front of 10,719 at PGE Park. Portland remains 2.5 games behind Salt Lake in the Pacific Coast League's North Division.
After losing the first two games of their five-game set with Edmonton, Portland won the final three to win the series. The Beavers are 1.5 games behind the second-place Trappers.
Portland fell behind 4-0 early Saturday night, but - just as the night before - the Beavers took advantage of a big inning. This time, the Beavers scored six runs in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead.
Portland sent 11 men to the plate in the frame and had eight hits, including three consecutive doubles by Alex Fernandez, Wiki Gonzalez and Clay Condrey.
The Beavers' lead didn't last long, as the Trappers drove Condrey out of the game with a two-run seventh-inning rally.
Matt Hampton, who relieved Condrey, allowed two inherited runners to score, but ending up getting first victory of the season after Portland pulled ahead in the seventh. He worked one inning, allowing one hit.
In the seventh, after Bozied reached third base on his unusual single, Xavier Nady hit a sacrifice fly, giving Portland a 8-6 lead.
Tim Drew took the loss, allowing both of the Beavers' seventh-inning runs.
Jason Bay went 3-for-4 for the Beavers and had a third-inning double. Fernandez also had three hits.
The Beavers start their final home series of the year on Sunday against the Tacoma Rainiers. First pitch is 5:05.
NOTES: Matt Bruback will make his Beavers debut Sunday as the team's starting pitcher ... in his last six games, Jason Bay is hitting .476 .... Saturday's crowd pushed the Beavers over the 400,000 mark in attendance for the third time in three years ... Portland won its first series since July 25-28 when it took three-of-four from Fresno.
