Tucson Drops Opener in Sacramento

Sacramento pounded out 12 hits and two home runs Sunday night as the River Cats handed Tucson a 7-1 loss in front of 10,233 at Raley Field.

Tucson fell to 3-3 on the 10-game road trip and dropped to 69-67 overall. The Sidewinders will need to go 4-4 over the last eight games of the season to have a winning season.

The Sidewinders avoided the shutout when Doug DeVore hammered his 13th home run in the ninth inning off Mark Kusiewicz.

Bobby Crosby started the scoring in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer off Mike Gosling. The home run was Crosby's 20th of the season.

Sacramento increased the lead to 4-0, scoring twice in the fourth inning. Jermaine Dye, on a rehab assignment from Oakland, singled in Michael Lockwood. Graham Koonce collected his 107th RBI with a two-out single that scored Chris Prieto. Dye was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

The River Cats tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, two coming on Luis Lopez's 18th home run of the year. Sacramento has hit a minor league leading 143 home runs.

Tucson dropped to 69-67. The Sidewinders and River Cats will play game two of the five-game series Monday night at Raley Field with a 7:05 p.m. start. Edgar Gonzalez (7-7 3.93) will start for Tucson against Erik Hiljus (11-8 4.65).
