Everett AquaSox News Release
EVERETT, Wash. -- The Everett AquaSox (13-21) fell into last place in the Northwest League's West Division for the first time this season as a five-run outburst by the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (14-20) gave way to the Frogs' sixth straight loss to the division foe by a score of 7-4.
The Volcanoes blew open a 1-1 game when they rallied with two outs in the sixth inning, started by left-fielder Charles Jones who reached on a close play at first. The next four batters reached base after Jones kept the inning alive, with first baseman Daniel Brock plating home two runners on a triple that flew over the head of right-fielder Mario Yepez, shortstop John Eshleman recording an RBI single and designated hitter Jesus Galindo capping off the big inning with a two-run homer to right field. The Volcanoes scored six of their seven runs in the game with two outs.
The Sox won the first four meetings between the two teams to start 2011, but fell to 5-10 at home this season with third straight loss to Salem-Keizer at Everett Memorial Stadium. The Volcanoes, after starting the season 2-16, have won 12 of their last 16 to pull into third place.
Overshadowed in the disappointing loss was Everett starting pitcher Joe DiRocco who was solid in his first ever minor league start in place of left-hander Jordan Shipers, who was held out of the game for precautionary reasons due to a minor injury on his throwing hand. DiRocco went four innings allowing just one run and three hits.
Also in the game, center-fielder Jarrett Burgess hit a towering home run to left in the third inning that tied him for team high with four home runs on the season, as well as moved him into second place in RBI with 14.
The AquaSox will look to end their second longest losing streak of the season as they send out left-hander Bennett Whitmore (2-2, 4.75 ERA) against Salem-Keizer right-hander Lorenzo Mendoza (2-2, 6.21 ERA) at 7:05 p.m. on Fox Sports 1380 KRKO.
