Lancaster Stormers News Release
How do the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs keep doing it?
How does it keep happening to the Lancaster Barnstormers?
The Barnstormers owned a 3-1 lead with one out left to go on Friday evening, only to see that lead evaporate into a 4-3, 10-inning loss in the opener of a three-game series at Regency Furniture Stadium. It was Lancaster's ninth straight one-run loss on the road this season.
Braxton Lee opened the ninth with a dribble off the fingertips of reliever Tyler Suellentrop. Jake Hoover raced in and made a desperate throw trying for the out and sailed the ball into the first base seats. Ryan Haug followed with a walk, putting the tying runs on base. Suellentrop nearly escaped. Michael Baca bunted into a force at second, but then stole second himself. Jack Sundberg struck out looking, bringing Lancaster to the edge of victory. The next two pitches proved disastrous. Suellentrop fired a wild pitch to enable Lee to score, and Michael Wielansky rode the next pitch inside the first base bag for a game-tying double.
Erik Cha (0-2) took over and was able to get out of the inning after loading the bases.
Cha bunted with Trace Loehr at second to open the tenth. Endrys Briceno (4-0) fumbled the bunt, allowing Cha to reach, then missed with the throw to first, giving Loehr third. Baca made a diving stop into the hole at short to rob Hoover of a go-ahead single. Shawon Dunston, Jr. popped to short for the second out. Melvin Mercedes was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Briceno fanned Andretty Cordero to end the inning.
Joe DeLuca, who had fanned four times previously, lined a single into center off Cha in the bottom of the inning to score Alex Crosby with the deciding run.
Lancaster took a 3-0 lead on RBI singles by Mercedes and Cordero in the third inning and another by Trayvon Robinson in the sixth.
Brooks Hall and Bret Clarke pitched shutout baseball through six innings before an unearned run scored in the seventh on Wielansky's first double and third hit of the game. West Tunnell got four more outs to send the game to the ninth.
Lancaster will send RHP Oscar De La Cruz (2-0) to the mound on Saturday evening against lefty Denson Hull (2-3). The game will be on the Barnstormers YouTube channel, beginning at 6:30.
NOTES: Lancaster is 4-13 in one-run games overall...Hall has thrown eight shutout innings over two starts...The Barnstormers faced Daryl Thompson as the Blue Crabs' starter for the 29th time...Both of Lancaster's closers (Scott Shuman and Josh Graham) are out with injuries.
