South Georgia Wildcats News Release
TEAM NOTES/TRENDS:
LETS KEEP PLAYING: In eight games this season, the Wildcats are outscoring opponents 174-to-145 in the first half. But, coming out in the third quarter the Wildcats are getting outscored 106-to-57 and managing to keep pace with their opponents in the fourth scoring 121 points a piece. Last week against Rio Grande Valley the Wildcats shutout the Dorados in the first half and put up 21 points in the second half, zero points in the third to fall to Rio Grande 37-39.
NOT SO SPECIAL TEAMS: The âCats kickoff return unit has returned 40 kickoffs for 471 yards and one touchdown this season. Their opponents have returned 42 kickoffs for 843 yards and three touchdowns. The Wildcats allowed six returns for 130 yards and one score against Louisville, seven returns for 222 yards and one touchdown to Albany and three returns for 71 yards and one touchdown to Manchester. South Georgia's best performances this season have been against Louisville as they returned six kickoffs for 116 yards and their only return kickoff for a score was against Arkansas when OS Archie Turner returned a kickoff for a 56 yard score.
LEADER OF THE âCATS: In his second season with the Wildcats (2004 in Cape Fear), WR/LB Chris McKinney is emerging as one of the league's premier Ironman. McKinney leads the team among active players this season in receiving yards (411), receptions (39) and receiving touchdowns (12). He also leads the team in tackles with 27 (20 solo) and has three pass break-ups. Last season, McKinney totaled 46 receptions for 519 yards and 14 touchdowns and totaled 64 tackles (23 solo) and returned one interception for a 43 yard score.
"PICK" THE AMERICAN CONFERENCE: Not the best category to lead, Wildcats quarterback Bobby Pesavento leads the af2 with 13 interceptions thrown this season. Pesavento has thrown seven picks in his last two games. Rounding out the top five are Albany Conquest's D. Bryant (12), Arkansas Twisters' Travis Motley (10), Macon Knight's Lionel Hayes (10) and Green Bay's Johnny Turman and Wilkes-Barre's Kyle Rowley each with nine. The six teams that lead the af2 in interceptions are members of the American Conference and three of the top four are members of the South Division. PLAYERS/MATCHUPS TO WATCH:
WILDCATS QB BOBBY PESAVENTO: Pesavento was 14-of-36 for 254 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions last week against the Dorados. In seven games, Pesavento is 174-of-291 for 1,824 yards, 40 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He is averaging 260 passing yards per game and has a quarterback rating of 103.99.
WILDCATS WR/LB CHRIS MCKINNEY: McKinney had two receptions for 66 yards and one touchdown last week against Rio Grande Valley. He also added two tackles and two pass break-ups. On the season, McKinney has 39 catches for 411 yards and leads the Wildcats in touchdown receptions with 12. He also leads the team in tackles with 27 (20 solo) and has three pass break-ups.
WILDCATS WR/DB ROB KEEFE: Keefe led the team with seven tackles and three pass break-ups in last week's loss to the Dorados. In five games with the Wildcats, Keefe has totaled 12 catches for 80 yards and had rushed four times for three yards and one touchdown. Keefe also has 17.5 tackles (14 solo), eight pass break-ups and one fumble recovery.
WILDCATS OL/DL TANAKA SCOTT: Scott had four tackles and one sack in last week's contest against Rio Grande Valley. On the season, Scott has 17 tackles (14 solo), 2.5 tackles for a loss and leads the team with 3.5 sacks. He also has one forced fumble, one recovered fumble, one blocked kick and one safety on the year.
DUSTERS QB JULIAN REESE: Reese has thrown for 2,212 yards on 169 completions and 39 touchdowns. He is averaging 272 passing yards per game and has a quarterback rating of 108.13. He also has rushed for 90 yards on 47 carries and has 16 rushing touchdowns.
DUSTERS DS JIMMY GASTON: On the season, Gaston leads the team with 46 tackles (39 solo), four tackles for a loss and has two interceptions and 10 pass break-ups.
DUSTERS OS CHAVIS MCCOLLISTER: McCollister has 59 catches for 921 yards and 19 touchdowns. He is averaging 153.5 receiving yards per game.
DUSTERS WR/DB KENDRIC WALKER and WR/LB DJ HUMPHRIES: On the season, Walker has 29 catches for 354 yards and seven touchdowns and has returned 28 kickoffs for 370 yards and four touchdowns. Humphries has accounted for 25 receptions 313 yards and four touchdowns. He also has 22.5 tackles (17 solo), one interception and four pass break-ups.
