Florida Firecats News Release

Estero, FL- With 9.5 tackles (7 solo) in week 8 against Louisville, Roy "Snake" Stabler became af2's all-time leading tackler with 294 career tackles (225 solo). Stabler passed former teammate and friend Quincy Sorrell who had previously held the record with 287.5. He then followed up his record-breaking performance last week by becoming the only player to register 300 tackles in the af2.

Roy played his college ball at Southern Mississippi where he first received the "Snake" nickname from his coaches who borrowed the name from former Alabama & Oakland Raider QB Ken Stabler.

Stabler began his pro career in the National Indoor Football League as a teammate of current Firecats head coach Kevin Bouis with the Mississippi Firedogs where the duo won a championship in 2000. In 2001 he made the move to the af2 playing with Baton Rouge. Stabler then became a member of the Firecats in 2002 helping the team win the American Conference. The next year he earned All af2 1st team honors and All af2 2nd team honors in 2004 in addition to winning the ArenaCup.

"The awards are nice but there is nothing like winning a championship, hopefully we'll get a shot at another one." Said Stabler, "300 tackles only means one thing though, I'm getting old and have been around too long." Stabler is one of the older veterans on the team and had retired after last season with designs on coaching but got the itch to play again when the season rolled around. "I'll keep playing as long as I am healthy and I still enjoy it, but it's easy to want to keep playing when you're winning."

Roy Stabler will be featured on the cover of this week's game day program. Proceeds raised from the sale of the program go to help bring kids from Big Brothers Big Sisters to Firecats home games.

The 2004 ArenaCup Champion Florida Firecats host their South Division rivals the Birmingham Steeldogs at Germain Arena this Saturday June 4th at 7:30pm. Tickets are available now! Call (239) 390-2287 today to reserve your seats!
