South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks came out confident in the rubber match of a series against the Fort Wayne TinCaps, scoring two runs in their first at bat. The success wouldn't last, however, as Fort Wayne dominated the rest of the way in a 7-4 victory Friday night at Parkview Field.
Leading 2-0 in the bottom of the first, the Silver Hawks saw their deficit cut in half on a Nate Freiman RBI single. The Tincaps took the lead with two more runs in the second off South Bend starter Adam Worthington (LP, 3-3). Everett Williams and Daniel Meeley singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a double by Danny Payne to put Fort Wayne up for good.
The TinCaps tacked on one run in the fifth and three more in the sixth against Bradin Hagens (ND). Payne reached on a double before scoring on a Jason Hagerty single in the fifth. Payne picked up another RBI in the sixth on a single and later scored on a wild pitch after a sacrifice fly by Jeudy Valdez. Overall, Payne was 5-for-9 with three RBIs, five runs, and three stolen bases in the three-game series.
The Silver Hawks saw their record drop to 29-25 when they score first as they did Friday. Keon Broxton singled on the game's first pitch from Jose De Paula (WP, 6-3) before stealing second to put himself in scoring position. Broxton advanced to third on a ground out by David Nick before Bobby Borchering walked. After a Matt Davidson pop out and wild pitch that put Borchering at second, Ramon Castillo came through with a two-out single to give the Silver Hawks a 2-0 lead that wouldn't hold up.
De Paula settled down from there, throwing 5.0 innings while striking out five and walking just one. Ender Inciarte scored on an error in the seventh and drove home a run in the ninth to pace the Silver Hawks' offense the rest of the way against Nick Greenwood (SV, 1), who relieved De Paula for the remainder of the game to earn the save.
The Silver Hawks return home for a brief three-game series against the Lake County Captains (Cleveland Indians) on a Souvenir Saturday at 5:30 PM, with the first 1,000 fans receiving a Swoop bobble head. RHP Diogenes Rosario (4-4, 3.52 ERA) takes the mound for South Bend while Lake County sends LHP Giovanni Soto (6-6, 2.61 ERA) to the hill. Pregame coverage begins at 5:10 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
