June 19, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE â The Sounds took two from the Iowa Cubs on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium in front of 8,624 fans. The home team won the opener, 6-1, behind two moon shot home runs by J.J. Davis and a complete game four-hitter from John Wasdin. Four relievers combined to shut down Iowa in the nightcap and Tike Redman went deep as the Sounds recorded their PCL-leading eighth shutout victory in a 2-0 decision.
Down 1-0 in the last of the second of the first game, first baseman Carlos Rivera hit a one-out single to right-center. Davis smoked an 0-1 pitch off Dave Veres (0-1) over the trees beyond left field for his 13th round tripper of the season, providing Nashville a lead it would not relinquish.
Third basemen Mike Gulan led off the bottom of the fourth with his eighth homer, also to left field, against Iowa's Steve Smyth to up the Sounds lead to 3-1. The Sounds capped the scoring in the last of the sixth when Tony Alvarez tripled to center and Gulan walked before Rivera plated Alvarez with a sacrifice fly to right. Davis capped off his 3-for-3, four-RBI night with a towering two-run blast to left, his 14th longball of the season, tying him for third in the PCL.
Wasdin (7-3) retired 16 of the final 18 batters he faced to earn the victory after allowing a first-inning run. In his second complete game performance of the year â and second by a Sounds pitcher â he struck out 10 Cubs batters against one walk.
In the nightcap, the Sounds drew first blood in the fourth inning. Redman led off with his fourth home run of the season, to right field. Nashville doubled the advantage an inning later. Aaron Holbert reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, and with two out Redman hit a bouncing ball to first. Pitcher Phil Norton muffed the pill, allowing Holbert to race around third and score the Sounds' second run. Redman stole third base later in the frame, his league-leading 29th larceny.
The Sounds bullpen, having received a rest in game one, worked all seven innings in game two. Shawn Camp started the game and went 3 1/3 innings allowing one hit while striking out one. Mike Holtz relieved Camp and went 1/3 of an inning. Jim Mann (2-0) took to the mound next went 2 1/3 innings, equaling a season-high, while striking out a season-best three for the win. Mark Corey closed out the Cubs, pitching a perfect seventh inning, to earn his PCL-best 20th save of the year.
In the 7:00 p.m. finale of the five-game, four-day series on Friday evening, both teams will field starting pitchers who have yet to lose in 2003. Nashville will start right-hander Brian Meadows (3.0, 0.78), while Iowa will counter with right-hander Alan Benes (3-0, 3.45).
