Nashville Sounds News Release

NASHVILLE — The Oklahoma RedHawks scored early and often against Sounds starter Tom Fordham on their way to a 16-2 defeat of Nashville on Monday evening at Greer Stadium in the opener of a five-game series. The loss extended the Sounds' season-high winless streak to six in a row.

The loss did not hurt in the standings as Memphis rallied to defeat New Orleans, 4-3, scoring a run in the last of the ninth, to keep the Sounds' lead in the Pacific Coast League's East Division at 4 ½ games, but now over both the Zephyrs and the RedHawks.

By the time Fordham struck out RedHawks clean-up hitter Jason Hart for the initial out in the bottom of the first, he found himself on the short end of a 3-0 ballgame courtesy of a three-run blast by Mike Lamb. It was the infielder's seventh roundtripper of the season.

Lamb continued to chop up Fordham's offerings in the second inning with a three-run, bases-clearing double to center field to plate Danny Ardoin, Jermaine Clark, and Ryan Christenson, doubling the RedHawks' lead to six. Lamb finished the night with a 3-for-6 performance, scoring three runs in addition to the six he drove in.

Lamb's RBI total was equaled by Gerald Laird. Laird drove in his first run of the game with a third-inning solo blast off the guitar scoreboard in left-center, his eighth longball of the year. He drove in two more in the sixth with a single to right-center. His final three RBI were the last three runs of the ballgame. He touched Sounds catcher-turned-mopup-reliever Brad King for a three-run homer in the top of the ninth. Laird also matched Lamb with three hits on the evening and scored four runs in the onslaught.

For Nashville, the bright spots came from the top half of the order. Bobby Hill, making his Greer Stadium debut as a member of the Sounds, had two base hits from the leadoff position. Dave Doster reached base safely in his tenth straight game, going 1-for-4 with an RBI. Tony Alvarez had three hits and the other Nashville RBI, and Mike Gulan added two hits in the contest.

RedHawks starter Ryan Drese (8-6) went six innings, allowing one run to pick up the win, while Fordham (1-2) suffered the loss after allowing nine runs in his five innings of work. Former Sound Robert Ellis came on to allow one run over the final three frames for Oklahoma to pick up a garbage save, his third of the year.

The Sounds will look to put an end to their season-worst slide in Wednesday' s noon tilt. Right-hander Jeff Bennett (0-1, 4.35) will toe the rubber for Nashville in a spot start, filling in for the departed Matt Bruback. The RedHawks will counter with righty Rosman Garcia (1-0, 0.42).
