Nashville Sounds News Release

NASHVILLE — Nashville left-fielder John Barnes went 3-for-3 and blasted his sixth home run of the season to lead the Sounds to a 2-1 victory over the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds in the finale of a four-game series on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium.

The victory gave Nashville (26-19) a 3-1 series victory and their seventh win in eight home contests against the Redbirds.

Barnes opened the night's scoring with a solo blast in the bottom of the first inning against Memphis starter Jason Ryan to tie J.J. Davis for the team longball lead. Both teams combined to post zeroes until the top of the seventh when the Redbirds pushed the tying run across on Bo Hart's infield groundout.

The Sounds took a final 2-1 advantage against Memphis reliever Scott Layfield in the bottom of the eighth inning. Pinch-hitter Tony Alvarez led off the frame with a single and moved to second on a Tike Redman walk. After both runners advanced on Dave Doster's sacrifice bunt, Memphis elected to intentionally walk Barnes, who was already 3-for-3 in the contest and a triple short of the cycle. Third baseman Mike Gulan followed with a sacrifice fly to deep right that plated Alvarez with the go-ahead run.

Sounds starter Nelson Figueroa (4-2) picked up his second consecutive victory after allowing only one run and fanning four over 8.0 innings of work. Mark Corey came on to retire the Redbirds in order in the ninth to record his 12th save of the year. Layfield (0-2) was tagged with the loss after surrendering the game-winning run in his 0.2-inning stint.

Nashville continues its homestand on Friday evening by welcoming the Omaha Royals to town for the 7 p.m. opener of a four-game series. Right-hander Matt Guerrier (0-3) looks for his first victory of the season for the Sounds. He'll face Omaha right-hander Ryan Baerlocher (0-0).

Denver & The Mile High Orchestra, which formed at nearby Belmont University, bring their big band sound to Greer Stadium during a pre-game concert that will highlight the Sounds' second of five Faith Nights this season. The group will perform at 5:30 p.m. just inside the first-base entrance prior to the game. The concert is free for all individuals and groups that purchase a ticket for the game (ranging from $6-10 for adults).
