Seattle Sounders FC News Release
(Seattle, WA)- The Seattle Sounders (4-2-7) travel to the Carolinas for a two game road trip beginning with the Carolina RailHawks (4-4-5) Thursday, June 3. Kickoff at WakeMed Soccer Park is slated for 5:00 p.m. PT.
Fresh off a 2-0 third round U.S. Open Cup victory over MLS' Chivas USA on Tuesday night, Seattle returns to the home of the RailHawks for the second time this season. The two teams met May 28 with Carolina handing Seattle just its second loss of the season. Since losing that match, the Sounders are undefeated (1-0-4 in USL-1, 3-0 in U.S. Open Cup, 1-0 in exhibition).
Seattle's most recent USL-1 match resulted in a 1-1 draw with Montreal. Sounders forward Andre Schmid was awarded with USL-1 Team of the Week honors for his goal in the 80th minute, as was newly acquired defender Michael Rodriguez for his role in anchoring the defense. The match marked the team's fourth tie in five league matches.
The Carolina RailHawks look to continue their successful streak at home which has them undefeated in the regular season. In fact, before Tuesday night's 4-2 double overtime U.S. Open Cup loss to the Kansas City Wizards, Carolina had not lost a single game at WakeMed Park. The same is not true for Carolina on the road. Five consecutive road games over the past month have resulted in four losses and one draw.
Last Friday, Carolina returned home and beat the Portland Timbers 1-0. Midfielder Martin Nuñez, defender Kupono Low, and goalkeeper Chris McClellan received USL-1 Team of the Week honors for their performance in the victory. McClellan's five saves against Portland brought his total to a league leading 56.
