Seattle Sounders FC News Release
SEATTLE, WASH. - Sounders FC today announced that it has signed goalkeeper Spencer Richey and loaned goalkeeper Trey Muse to USL Championship side San Diego Loyal SC. Richey, a Seattle native and University of Washington product, joins the Rave Green after five professional seasons with Vancouver Whitecaps FC and FC Cincinnati. Muse, a Homegrown Player signing prior to the 2019 campaign, has 24 appearances for Tacoma Defiance, including 21 starts in 2019. Richey joins Stefan Frei and Stefan Cleveland in Sounders FC's goalkeeper group for the 2021 campaign.
"We're pleased to add a good local product like Spencer to the club and have him get to work with Tom Dutra and the rest of our goalkeeper unit," said Sounders FC General Manager & President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey. "Loaning Trey to San Diego gives him a good opportunity for some meaningful minutes, and we look forward to seeing how he performs this season."
Richey, 28, was Vancouver's third round selection in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft following a standout career at the University of Washington. After spending three seasons with Whitecaps FC II, making 46 USL appearances, he joined FC Cincinnati in 2018 for its final season in USL, appearing in 16 games. He remained with Cincinnati for its first two MLS seasons, starting 28 of 29 appearances. Outside of MLS play, he appeared in four Canadian Championship matches and two Concacaf Champions League fixtures with Vancouver. In his two collegiate seasons with the Huskies, Richey tallied 71 appearances and 30 clean sheets, earning a First Team All-Pac-12 selection in 2012.
Muse, 21, signed with Sounders FC as a Homegrown Player ahead of the 2019 season, starting 21 of 22 appearances as the primary goalkeeper for Tacoma Defiance as a rookie. He made two appearances for Defiance in 2020 prior to the COVID-19 suspension of play. A collegiate All-American and National Champion at the University of Indiana, Muse conceded just 19 goals in 49 starts over two NCAA seasons, accumulating a 38-4-7 record.
Sounders FC's roster remains at 22 players ahead of the upcoming 2021 season.
