Cascadia Rivalry on the Rave Green Horizon

Seattle Sounders FC heads north of the border this weekend for the club's first Cascadia fixture of the 2012 campaign. The Rave Green take on the Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday afternoon at BC Place. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. PT.

Saturday's match will be televised live on KONG 6/16 with Ross Fletcher and Kasey Keller on the call, and can also be seen in Spanish on KOMO2. The match can be heard on 97.3 KIRO FM and in Spanish on La Gran D 99.3 FM.

The stretch of five games in 15 days ended last Saturday with the second loss of the season, 1-nil to MLS-leaders Real Salt Lake. Seattle (7-2-1, 22 points) had matched a club record with five straight wins and now sits third in the West with games in hand.

With 22 points through its first 10 matches, Sounders FC continues to lead the league in points per match (2.2), and is one of just three teams with only two losses.

The congested schedule has brought contributions from veterans to rookies and newcomers. Fredy Montero led the team with a brace in a 2-0 win at Dallas last week, scoring (three) or assisting (one) in three straight matches. The youth has also made an impact as Andy Rose started three consecutive games last week, and teenager Cordell Cato made his MLS debut with the winning assist in Texas.

Seattle's defense has continued to lead the league, allowing three fewer goals than any other team. Sounders FC is yet to allow multiple goals in a game and the 0.40 goals against average is comfortably best in MLS.

The pace slightly slows this week as Sounders FC has six days between matches to prepare to defend the Cascadia Cup. Seattle won both road matches against Vancouver and Portland last season, becoming the holders of the inaugural Cascadia Cup in the MLS era. The Rave Green will look to Montero to lead the charge as he scored a brace in each Cascadia road fixture last season.

Sounders FC hopes to extend its MLS-best eight game (7-0-1) road unbeaten streak against a revived Whitecaps (5-3-2, 17 points) squad that currently sits fourth in the West and seventh overall. Vancouver had a three-match winning streak snapped last weekend with a 4-1 loss to New England. Seattle won the lone road match at Vancouver in 2011, and is undefeated against Cascadia rivals (2-0-2).

All told, Seattle and Vancouver sides have met 125 times - more than any other such inter-city series - since the original Sounders and Whitecaps came into the North American Soccer League in 1974. The brands and leagues may have changed from time to time yet the rivalry has always meant something special to the teams and their supporters.

The busiest month in club history will conclude with two more MLS matches, including a home contest with the Columbus Crew on Wednesday, May 23 and a road match at Chivas USA on Saturday, May 26.

An additional game will be added at the end of the month as Sounders FC will begin its run to a fourth straight Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The opponent and location of the third-round fixture are yet to be determined.

Vancouver Rivalry Dates to 1974

Saturday will mark the 119th meeting between Seattle and Vancouver teams in league or cup play since the Sounders and Whitecaps first collided on June 9, 1974 at the old Empire Stadium in a North American Soccer League match.

Following the demise of the Sounders in 1983, a new club comprised almost entirely of homegrown players, FC Seattle made its debut on June 10, 1984 at Memorial Stadium against the Whitecaps-one of four matches versus NASL teams in a challenge series. FC Seattle earned a 2-2 draw in the first match with Vancouver and scored its first victory against the 'Caps, 2-1, on August 4 at B.C. Place.

After the NASL folded Vancouver also formed a club around its plentiful native talent. The 86ers began play in the Canadian Soccer League in 1987, and faced FC Seattle in seven friendlies beginning that season through 1990.

The rivalry was renewed in 1994 when the Sounders joined the 86ers in the A-League. Vancouver adopted the Whitecaps brand once again beginning in 2001, and soon after supporters groups from Seattle, Portland and Vancouver founded the Cascadia Cup, a three-way competition to determine Pacific Northwest supremacy amongst the Sounders, Timbers and Whitecaps.

Saturday marks Seattle's first match at BC Place as a MLS franchise. On June 20, 1983, a crowd of 60,342 - a Pacific Northwest record attendance for soccer - packed BC Place for the first sporting event, Vancouver's 2-1 victory over Seattle. Nearly 20 years later, on July 28, 2002, the first event at Qwest Field drew a USL-1 record 25,515 for the Sounders' 4-1 win over the Caps.

Hinton in the Mix

Sounders FC broadcast analyst Alan Hinton has been on both sides of the Seattle-Vancouver rivalry, both in the NASL and A-League days. In 1978 during his final season as a player (and his first year as an assistant coach), Hinton established a league record with 30 assists and scored his penultimate goal in a win over Seattle.

In 1980, Hinton became head coach of the Sounders, leading them to a NASL-record 25 wins that season, the Trans-Atlantic Cup title in 1981 and a Soccer Bowl appearance in 1982. Two years later Hinton took over as head coach in Vancouver and his Whitecaps played the first game against FC Seattle.

Keeping Fresh

Schedule congestion has allowed coach Sigi Schmid to test his depth, and he has done so this season with little hesitation. Seattle has had a different starting XI every game this season. Only four other teams (Dallas, Los Angeles, New England and Portland) have started a different group each game, with Seattle posting the only winning record. Schmid has started 21 different players - tied with Chivas USA and FC Dallas for the most in MLS - and has used 23 players (second only to Dallas and Los Angeles). The squad rotation has resulted in positive results as 12 Sounders FC players have recorded a point this season. Only San Jose (14) and New York (13) have had contributions from more players.

Fredy Being Fredy

Fredy Montero followed up impressive performances against Los Angeles and Philadelphia with perhaps his strongest outing of the year. Montero came on at halftime in Dallas and immediately impacted the match. The crafty Colombian striker showed his skill on the winning goal as he cut back across two Dallas defenders in the box and finished inside the near post. Three minutes later, Montero dove for a deflected cross in the box and placed his header outside of the reach of keeper Kevin Hartman. It was Montero's first brace of the season, and the quickest two goals scored by a single player in club history.

His streak of three games with a goal (three) or assist (one) is the fifth-longest in MLS this season. With 37 career goals, Montero is the league's third-leading goalscorer since 2009 (Chris Wondolowski - 50 goals and Dwayne De Rosario - 44). Montero won MLS Goal of the Week for his golazo versus the Galaxy and is nominated this week for his first strike at Dallas.

King of Cascadia

The Cascadia Cup-holders will once again look to Fredy Montero to keep Seattle atop the Pacific Northwest. Montero netted a brace in both away Cascadia fixtures last season, and he assisted on the first goal of the Cascadia rivalry in MLS play (May 14). In Vancouver, Montero scored a Goal of the Year candidate, and added another tally four minutes later to secure the 3-1 win. At Portland, Montero twice brought Seattle level before Osvaldo Alonso converted the winning penalty kick.

Meredith in the Nets

Bryan Meredith has stepped into Seattle's nets without skipping a beat. The 22-year-old keeper is much younger than injured starter Michael Gspurning (31) but has put up some impressive stats. Meredith's streak of 274 shutout minutes to begin his MLS career was the third-longest in league history (Kasey Keller - 411 minutes in 2009, and Ronald Waterrus - 344 minutes in 2007). He is currently leading MLS with a 0.29 goals against average (minimum 200 minutes played), and he has two shutouts in his three starts. He also leads the league with a 90.9 saves percentage (minimum 10 saves) and his 274-minute shutout streak was seventh-longest in MLS this season.

Young Guns

The Seattle squad seems to get deeper each season, and 2012 is no different. With the likes of Alex Caskey, Cordell Cato and Andy Rose joining to mix, coach Sigi Schmid always has options. Caskey, a newcomer to MLS, has started three of his six appearances with a team-leading two assists. Cato became the second-youngest player to don the Rave Green when he subbed on in the second half at Dallas. Cato also became the youngest player to record a point for Seattle as he assisted on Fredy Montero's winning goal. Rose, Seattle's first pick in the 2012 Supplemental Draft, started three straight games after making his MLS debut against Philadelphia, and recorded an assist on Fredy Montero's second goal in Dallas.

Road to the Cup

The 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup begins this week with the first and second rounds. The 16 U.S.-based MLS teams enter in round three in late-May.

The 99th edition of the U.S. Open Cup includes a 64-team field, which represents to largest in the modern era (1995-present). The first-round matches kick off on Tuesday, May 15, and second-round games are scheduled for Tuesday, May 22. The third round is slated for May 29.

The third-round matches will be based on geographic proximity. The Kitsap Pumas play at home against Cal FC (May 15, 7:15 p.m. at Bremerton Memorial Stadium) and the Portland Timbers U-23s host PSA Elite (May 15, 7:30 p.m. at JELD-WEN Field). The winner of the Kitsap match will visit the Wilmington Hammerheads (USL PRO) and the Timbers-PSA Elite victor will travel to play the Carolina Railhawks.

The quarterfinals are set for June 26, the semifinals for July 10, and the final for August 7 or 8.

Sounders FC Participates in Beach Soccer Club World Cup

The Seattle Sounders FC has formed a selection of world-class beach soccer players to take part in the Beach Soccer Club World Cup, to be held from May 12 to May 19 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Sounders FC participated in the inaugural tournament in 2011 and will once again be the sole U.S. representative. Seattle will be joining participating teams from FC Barcelona (Spain), AC Milan (Italy), Sporting (Portugal), Boca Juniors (Argentina), Lokomotiv (Russia), Al-Ahli (Dubai) and Brazilian clubs Santos, Corinthians, Flamengo, Botafogo and Vasco de Gama.

The Mundialito de Clubes was created in 2011. The eight-day tournament is held at La Represa de Gaurapiranga (Sao Paulo). The first round matches will be played from May 12 to May 15 followed by the quarterfinals (May 16), semifinals (May 18) and final (May 19).

In last year's tournament, Seattle finished with one win - 4-nil versus Sporting - and three losses, including a defeat in a penalty shootout in the quarterfinals against Flamengo. The 2011 tournament was televised in 109 countries across five continents, reaching an estimated audience of 62 million people. There were 216 goals scored last year for an average of 7.7 per match.

The Seattle Sounders Beach Soccer team won the opening game of the 2012 tournament, a 3-2 win over host club Sao Paulo.

In a special draft held in Sao Paulo, Sounders FC built its roster by selecting the following players: Michael McAndrew (USA/Goalkeeper), Cesar Esteves (Brazil/Goalkeeper), Francisco Cati (Mexico/Defender), Francis Farberoff (USA/Defender), Osmar Moreira (Brazil/Defender), Oscar Gil (USA/Midfield), Ali Alblooshi (United Arab Emirates/Midfield), Morgan Plata (Mexico/Midfield), Nicolas Perera (USA/Forward) and Ruiz Augustin (El Salvador/Forward).

Roger Levesque named MLS W.O.R.K.S. Humanitarian of the Month

Major League Soccer and the Seattle Sounders FC announced Roger Levesque was selected as the MLS W.O.R.K.S. "Humanitarian of the Month" for May. The award recognizes Levesque's efforts to raise funds for the Ronald McDonald House, among several other charitable efforts.

Levesque participated in the Men in Kilts fundraiser, donning an authentic kilt alongside other Seattle celebrities to raise money for the Seattle Ronald McDonald House and its mission of supporting families with seriously ill children.

Fans voted for the "King of the Kilt" with a $25 vote, which sponsors one night of housing for a family. The organization raised $35,000 and the money will be used to provide 1,400 nights of sponsored housing and services for families of seriously ill or injured children. Levesque raised nearly $4,000 on his own, fourth-best among the 14 Seattle-area celebrities who participated.

The Seattle Ronald McDonald House is a home-away-from-home for more than 700 families each year while their children receive medical treatment. They also provide a van service for families staying in Anchorage, Alaska while their children receive medical care.

Levesque also participated in several other charitable efforts as he continually works with America SCORES Seattle, reading Shel Silverstein to children in April. He also helped raise awareness alongside the Emerald City Supports for a Sounders FC supporter who lost his battle with melanoma.

MLS W.O.R.K.S. is Major League Soccer's community outreach initiative dedicated to addressing important social issues affecting young people and serves as a platform for both League and club philanthropic programs. MLS W.O.R.K.S. seeks to establish Major League Soccer as a leader for improving the lives of people through sport.

Sounders FC and SUBWAY© Restaurants to Host Family Fitness Night

WHO: Seattle Sounders FC forward David Estrada and midfielder Mauro Rosales, representatives from SUBWAY© restaurants of Seattle and 300 local youth.

WHAT: Sounders FC players will share training, fitness and nutrition tips with local youth and their families.

Families will be led through a series of interactive exercises including: soccer drills, basketball, jump rope and Zumba.

SUBWAY© restaurants will provide sandwiches and Sounders FC prizes to families in attendance.

According to the Centers for Disease Control's National Health and Nutrition

Examination Surveys (2007-2008), approximately 68 percent of adults are overweight or obese, with 75 million adult Americans considered obese.

Children have become heavier as well. In the past 30 years, the prevalence of childhood obesity has more than doubled among children ages 2-5, has tripled among youth ages 6-11, and has more than tripled among adolescents ages 12-19.

Recap: Seattle Sounders FC 0 vs. Real Salt Lake 1 - May 12, 2012

A second half goal from Fabian Espindola was the difference as Real Salt Lake beat Sounders FC, 1-0, on Saturday night on the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field. The loss snapped Seattle's five-match winning streak and six-match unbeaten streak, dating back to March 31.

In the 51st minute, Espindola got around the defense on a ball from Luis Gil and half-volleyed a left-footed shot past Bryan Meredith. The goal ended Seattle's 321-minute shutout streak, as well as Meredith's individual streak of 275 minutes.

The Rave Green looked strong in the first half with multiple chances in the opening 20 minutes. In the 10th minute, a Mauro Rosales corner kick found Jeff Parke, who's header was cleared back to Andy Rose at the top of the box. Rose sent a hard shot through traffic that went wide.

In the 14th minute, Eddie Johnson rose above the RSL defense to connect with an accurate cross from Adam Johansson but his shot missed.

In the 16th minute, Johnson took possession of the ball near midfield and proceeded to weave through defenders for 40-yards, bringing the ball into the box, but his 15-yard attempt sailed high.

Seattle's best second half chance came in the 71st minute when Rosales' cross found Montero close to the near post but the Colombian's header went wide.

Alvaro Fernandez made his return to the pitch when he came on for David Estrada in the 58th minute. Fernandez had missed the previous five games with a quad injury.

Cordell Cato made his home debut when he came on for Rosales in the 75th minute. After an Alex Caskey corner kick in the 88th minute, he controlled a ball with his head inside the six-yard box but his headed attempt was cleared away in front of the line by a Salt Lake defender.

RSL defender Chris Wingert left the game in the 20th minute after straining his left hamstring battling for a ball with Rosales near the end line. He was replaced by Chris Schuler.

Tonight's attendance was 39,312, the largest of the season for Sounders FC and the third largest all-time for an MLS match at CenturyLink Field.

Recap: Seattle Sounders FC 2 at FC Dallas 0 - May 9, 2012

A Fredy Montero second-half brace fueled Sounders FC (7-1-1, 22 points) to a 2-0 win over FC Dallas (3-5-3, 12 points) Wednesday night at FC Dallas Stadium. Bryan Meredith picked up his second shutout in as many starts as Seattle tied a franchise record with their fifth straight win and extended its MLS-best road unbeaten streak to eight games (7-0-1).

After coming on as a halftime sub for Mauro Rosales, Montero put Seattle on the board first in the 68th minute. Cordell Cato won a ball near the corner on the right side, then played the ball to Montero in the box. Montero juked two Dallas defenders, then finished with a rocket inside the near post.

Just three minutes later in the 71st, Andy Rose led a streaking Alex Caskey down the left side, who sent a cross in traffic. The ball's path was altered due to deflection, but Montero dove forward to head the goal past Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman to complete the brace. Montero now has three goals on the season.

It was the MLS and Sounders FC debut for Cato, who came on for David Estrada in the 65th minute. The Trinidad and Tobego international picked up his first MLS point just minutes later when he assisted on the first goal. At 19 years of age, he is the youngest player to record a point for Sounders FC.

Caskey picks up his second assist on the season. The 23-year-old assisted on Zach Scott's game-winner in a 1-0 home win over Colorado on April 14.

Meredith made five saves as he picked up his second straight clean sheet in just his second career start. In the 39th minute, Scott Sealy got off an uncontested header in the box, but Meredith leapt high and right to swat the ball away, then dove forward to smother the ball before another attempt could be made. The 22-year-old keeper is riding a 225-minute shutout streak to start his career.

The Rave Green have now tied a franchise-record with five straight wins and extended its unbeaten streak to an MLS-best six games (5-0-1).

Sounders FC overall has gone 271 minutes without conceding a goal, and now has six shutouts in nine games this season. They lead MLS with just three goals allowed and a 0.33 goals against average.

Mauro Rosales almost put Seattle up in the first half when Rose found him in the box in the 18th minute. The Argentine's first shot was saved by a sprawling Hartman, and his put-back attempt hit the post.

Seattle is now 3-1-3 all time versus FC Dallas in MLS play and 2-0-2 at FC Dallas Stadium. Tonight's 2-0 result marks the first time a meeting between the two sides was decided by more than one goal.

It was the 100th career MLS start for Eddie Johnson, who scored 24 goals playing for Dallas from 2001-05.

Patrick Ianni, who was part of the original starting lineup, had lower back pain during warm-ups and was replaced by Jeff Parke. Roger Levesque took Parke's spot on the bench.

About Vancouver

Vancouver is currently fourth in the West with 17 points through the first 10 matches. The Whitecaps started the 2012 campaign with a four-game unbeaten streak (2-0-2) before dropping consecutive matches to San Jose and Kansas City. Vancouver then went on a three-game winning streak that was snapped at New England last weekend, 4-1. The 'Caps have been held scoreless just once this season and have posted six shutouts (tied-first with Seattle). Their 1.10 goals against average is fifth in MLS.

Whitecaps Notables

Head Coach Martin Rennie's 4-3-3 attack is led by former-Sounder Sebastien Le Toux, Eric Hassli, and Camilo up front. Le Toux leads the team with three goals this season and has compiled 28 goals and 21 assists since the beginning of 2010. Hassli and Camilo each have two goals and two assists so far in 2012 (the two combined for 22 goals and five assists in 2011), while midfielder Davide Chiumiento leads the team with three assists.

Captain Jay DeMerit commands a consistent Vancouver back line that has three players with nine or more starts in 2012, as well as two more with at least five. Lee Young-Pyo, the Korean right back in his first year in MLS, has a goal and an assist while playing every minute so far this season.

Academy Update

Sounders FC U23 and Academy teams were both in action this past weekend, with the U23's traveling up to British Columbia and the Academy squads hosting home fixtures at Starfire Sports. The U23's opened up their PDL season with four points-a 2-1 win over Whitecaps FC and a 1-1 draw against Victoria Highlanders-while the Academy teams each came away with a draw and loss in their last home matches of the season.

Goals from Darwin Jones and Fernando Monge fueled the U23's to a 2-1 win over the Whitecaps on Saturday. On Sunday, the team took the ferry to Victoria to take on the Highlanders, where a second-half Monge equalizer leveled the game at one goal apiece, a score that would end up being final. Goalkeeper Doug Herrick was strong in net for Seattle in both matches.

The LA Galaxy and Chivas USA academy teams traveled up to Starfire this weekend to take on the Sounders FC in their last home games of the season. On Saturday, the Galaxy U18's shutout Seattle 4-0, while the U16's played to a dramatic 4-4 draw. David Olsen netted a brace, while Denis Kalamar and Duncan McCormick each added a score.

Sunday's fixtures started with the U18's playing Chivas USA to a 1-1 draw, thanks to an Aaron Kovar PK goal in the game's final minutes. After Austin Curtis was brought down in the box trying to score, the Chivas goalkeeper was ejected and the penalty awarded. In the U16 matchup, Olsen and McCormick each scored first half goals, but a second-half Chivas score was the difference in a 3-2 defeat.

The U23's return to action Saturday night in a matchup with the Kitsap Pumas at Bremerton High School. The next Friday (May 25), they host their first PDL game against Victoria at Franklin Pierce High School. The Academy teams next game is their last of the season-a June 3rd matchup with the Whitecaps in Vancouver.

Throw-ins

Brad Evans will be at the Pro Shop on Tuesday, May 15 from 6-7 p.m. to meet fans...Seattle's Jeff Parke played 11 games for the USL Whitecaps in 2009...Former Sounder Sebastien Le Toux joined Vancouver from Philadelphia this offseason. Le Toux played for the USL Sounders and played one season for Seattle in MLS...Sounders FC remains atop MLS in points per match: Seattle (2.2), Kansas City (2.1), San Jose (2.09), New York (2) and Real Salt Lake (2)...Sounders eliminated the Whitecaps from the NASL playoffs in 1977 and 1980, the only two times the sides met in postseason. Five times Seattle and Vancouver met in the A-League or USL-1 playoffs. The Sounders prevailed in 1995 en route to its first title, plus 2003 and 2004; Vancouver won in 1997 and 2002.
