SEATTLE, WASH. - This Sunday, February 23, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. PT, Sounders FC continues its commitment to sustainability and carbon neutrality with a tree planting event along the banks of the Green-Duwamish River in Tukwila - mere minutes from the team's home at Starfire Sports.

Head Coach Brian Schmetzer, defender Shane O'Neill and midfielder Harry Shipp will work alongside fan volunteers, Sounders FC staff and students from local elementary schools and their families to plant over 450 trees at the outing.

As a club, Sounders FC is committed leadership in environmental sustainability. Last year, the Rave Green became the first professional sports team from the five major men's leagues - MLS, NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL - to commit to carbon neutrality. Working with Seattle-based Sustainable Business Consulting, the team implemented ways to reduce its carbon footprint, but, for sources unable to be eliminated, Sounders FC offsets emissions through the Evergreen Carbon Capture program of Forterra, a nonprofit that works for regional sustainability.

In 2019, Sounders FC and volunteers planted enough trees to offset the club's 2018 emissions and 10% more along the Duwamish at Rediscovery Point and looks to build upon that work this year.

The planting site in 2020 was selected in partnership with the City of Tukwila, DIRT Corps and Forterra specifically for Sounders FC. The river provides important ecological, social and economic resources for people in and around King County, but a lack of trees and shrubs growing along its banks has negatively impacted the habitat for local salmon, causing a ripple effect throughout the watershed. Planting and maintaining trees along the site will create shade to protect cool water, as well as creating new habitats for native fish, pollinators and other wildlife.
