Sounders FC Faces Archrival Portland Timbers Sunday Evening at Providence Park
August 14, 2021 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Seattle Sounders FC News Release
SEATTLE, WASH. - After a break from MLS action that saw Seattle Sounders FC (9-3-6, 33 points) cruise through Tigres UANL 3-0 in Leagues Cup action on August 10, the Rave Green return to league play against archrival Portland Timbers (7-8-2, 23 points) on Sunday evening at Providence Park (7:00 p.m. PT / FS1, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM).
Sounders FC is looking to get back in the MLS win column after earning just one point in three home matches from July 25-August 4, including losses to both Sporting Kansas City and the San Jose Earthquakes.
Dating back to 1975, Seattle is 55-42-15 all-time against the Timbers in all competitions, with a 13-10-7 mark side in MLS regular season play. The Rave Green emerged victorious earlier this season by a score of 2-1 on May 9. MLS Golden Boot co-leader Raúl Ruidíaz scored a penalty in the 63rd minute and Fredy Montero found the back of the net in the 79th minute for Seattle. The visiting team has won seven of the last nine meetings in the regular-season series.
Sunday's match is the first in a three-game road stretch for Seattle that will send it to both Dallas and Columbus before the week ends. Following the three road matches, Los Angeles hosts the 2021 MLS All-Star Game against the best of Liga MX. Sounders FC saw a club-record six All-Stars selected this season.
