SEATTLE, WASH. - Sounders FC was eliminated from 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League play on Thursday evening, falling via penalties after a 2-2 draw with CD Olimpia in the second leg of Round of 16 play. The two sides also drew 2-2 in last Thursday's first leg, resulting in the clubs going straight to penalties after an even 180 minutes of action. Cristian Roldan and João Paulo each recorded a goal and assist for Seattle, with the former now tallying two goals and an assist in his first two competitive matches in Rave Green. Brian Schmetzer's club now shifts gears to its 2020 MLS regular season opener on Sunday, March 1 against Chicago Fire FC at CenturyLink Field (7:00 p.m. PT / ESPN, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM).
The visitors struck early in the fourth minute, with Elvin Oliva rising up to meet a MatÃÂas Garrido corner kick for header past Stefan Frei. Seattle equalized in the 21st minute for the club's first goal at CenturyLink Field in 2020. After earning a foul on the right flank, new Designated Player João Paulo took the ensuing free-kick and found Roldan in the area for a header inside the far post. It marked the first goal of the 2020 campaign for Roldan, as well as the first Sounders FC assist for João Paulo, who scored the club's opening strike in the first leg last Thursday.
The Brazilian gave the Rave Green the lead in the 64th minute, giving him two goals in as many games as a Sounder. After Kelvin Leerdam won the ball pressing high in the attacking third, Roldan played a low ball to the top of the 18-yard-box to João Paulo, who rocketed a shot on his first touch that deflected off an Olimpia defender and into the back of the net.
Olimpia evened the game at 2-2 in the 86th minute, with Carlos Pineda scoring from distance on an assist from Yustin Arboleda, who scored a brace in the first leg. The score remained 2-2 through 90 minutes and went straight to penalties, where Olimpia edged Sounders FC 4-2 to advance to the Quarterfinals.
Brian Schmetzer's side begins 2020 MLS regular season play on Sunday, March 1 against Chicago Fire FC at CenturyLink Field (12:00 p.m. PT / ESPN, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM).
