Sensory Inclusion
Earthquakes Stadium has partnered with KultureCity to make all stadium programs and events sensory inclusive. This new initiative will promote an accommodating and positive experience for all guests and fans with sensory issues that visit the stadium.
Sensory bags, equipped with noise canceling headphones (provided by Puro Sound Labs), fidget tools, verbal cue cards (produced in conjunction with Boardmaker) and weighted lap pads will be available to all guests at Earthquakes Stadium who may feel overwhelmed by environmental auditory conditions. Fans can pick up sensory bags at the Guest Services office, near section 101.
"We are proud to make Earthquakes Stadium the first MLS stadium in California and fourth overall to be sensory inclusive certified," said Earthquakes Chief Operating Officer Jared Shawlee. "We care deeply about making sure all of our guests feel comfortable and wanted to provide the necessary assistance so everyone can have an enjoyable and memorable experience."
Sensory sensitivities or challenges with sensory regulation are often experienced by individuals with autism, dementia, PTSD and other similar conditions. One of the major barriers for these individuals is sensitivity to over stimulation and noise, which can be experienced at a venue like Earthquakes Stadium. With its new certification, Earthquakes Stadium is now better prepared to assist guests with sensory sensitivities in having the most comfortable and accommodating experience possible when attending an event. The certification process provides stadium staff with professional training by leading medical professionals on how to recognize those guests and fans with sensory needs and how to handle a sensory overload situation.
"To know that you soon will be able to see families attend soccer games, a true community binding experience, with their loved ones who have a sensory challenge and who were not able to previously attend, is truly a heartwarming moment," said KultureCity Co-Founder Julian Maha. "Our communities are what shapes our lives and to know that the San Jose Earthquakes are willing to go the extra mile to ensure that everyone, no matter their ability, is included in their community is amazing."
Prior to attending an event, families can download the free KultureCity App where one can view what sensory features are available and where they can access them. Also, on the App is the Social Story which will provide a preview of what to expect while enjoying an event at Earthquakes Stadium.
