Seattle Sounders FC News Release
TUKWILA, Wash. - Kenny Cooper and Marco Pappa scored in extra time as Seattle Sounders FC defeated the Portland Timbers, 3-1, Wednesday night at Starfire Stadium. Sounders FC will now host the Chicago Fire in the U.S. Open Cup semifinals on August 13.
After 69 minutes of scoreless play, Osvaldo Alonso put Seattle on the board with his first goal of the 2014 campaign. Near the touchline, Brad Evans back-heeled a pass to Lamar Neagle on the right side of the box. Neagle crossed to the far post to Alonso, who leapt and extended his leg to knock the ball past Donovan Ricketts.
The score remained 1-0 until the final moments of stoppage time, when Darlington Nagbe knocked in an equalizer after Portland had been pressuring the net.
In the 112th minute, Seattle broke the tie when Cooper headed in a ball from Gonzalo Pineda for his fourth goal of the tournament. Pappa added to the lead four minutes later when he blasted a right-footed shot past Ricketts to make it 3-1.
Diego Chara was issued a red card in the 99th minute, forcing the Timbers to play the remained or extra time with 10 men.
Cam Weaver was the source of much of the danger in the first 45 minutes, putting two of his three first-half shots on frame. In the 11th minute, his cross from the left side was deflected on frame and forced Donovan Ricketts into a diving save. He then hit the post in the 22nd minute on a cross from Brad Evans after.
Ricketts finished with six saves, including diving stop on a dangerous bending shot from Evans in the 58th minute.
Stefan Frei finished with eight saves and made a couple of key first-half stops. He leapt to parry a Rodney Wallace volley over the crossbar in the fifth minute, then sprawled to save a dangerous shot from Gaston Fernandez in the 20th minute.
Sounders FC continues Cascadia Cup action against the Timbers at CenturyLink Field on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. PT on ESPN2.
