Sound Tigers Lose 6-2 In Hershey
February 12, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Bridgeport Islanders News Release
HERSHEY, PA - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, surrendered four third-period goals en route to a 6-2 road loss to the Hershey Bears Saturday.
Sound Tigers goaltender Wade Dubielewicz once again showed the skills that earned him last season's AHL Rookie of the Year with several highlight-reel stops early in the game robbing Andre Savage on a diving effort 1:10 into contest on the save that stood out the most as Hershey took the first six shots of the game. The Sound Tigers then grabbed the territorial advantage, but the Bears regained it and took the lead with a pair of goals 2:17 apart late in the opening frame.
Savage finally solved Dubielewicz with a tough-angle shot just nine seconds into the first power play of the contest for his seventh goal of the season at the 15:40 mark off assists from Eric Perrin and Brett Clark. Former Sound Tiger Mike Souza then doubled the lead to 2-0 with an unassisted goal, his second marker of the year, with 2:03 left in the period.
The second period mirrored the first with Hershey controlling the flow early and the Sound Tigers grinding their way back into control of things before scoring two goals to knot things at 2-2.
First, Brendan Yarema set a new single-season, team record with his third shorthanded goal of the year, and third overall, with 4:27 left in the middle frame off assists from Rob Collins, his team-leading 21st helper and 35th point, and Chris Campoli. Then, Steve Regier tied the score with 23.6 seconds left in the period with his fourth goal of the season off assists from Jody Robinson and John Morlang.
All of the game's scoring ended up in the same net as the Bears scored four times in the third period for the win.
Jeff Ulmer banked the eventual game-winner off the back of Dubielewicz from behind the Sound Tigers net at 5:30 for his 14th goal of the season off assists from Mathieu Darche and Savage to make it 3-2. Perrin upped the lead to 4-2 with his 16th at 11:45 off assists from Bala and Savage. Ryan Steeves put the game out of reach at 5-2 with his second of the year at 16:26 off assists from Dennis Bonvie and Souza. And, Souza iced the win with a shorthanded, empty-net goal, his second tally of the game and third of the season, with 31.5 seconds left to play off assists from Ulmer and Dean Arsene to make it 6-2.
Savage was the first star of the game, Souza was the second and Ulmer was the third. Hershey netminder Peter Budaj made 28 saves for the win while Dubielewicz made 23 as the Sound Tigers lost despite a 30-29 shots on goal advantage. The Bears were 1 for 3 on the power play while the Sound Tigers were 0 for 3 with each team netting a shortie.
The Sound Tigers will visit Binghamton Senators next Thursday at 7:05 p.m. and host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at the home of the Islanders, the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, next Friday, February 18th at 7:30 p.m. The Sound Tigers' next home game at Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard will be Sunday, February 20th at 4:05 p.m. against the Worcester IceCats.
