Sound Tigers Lose 3-2 In Norfolk

NORFOLK, VA - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 3-2 on the road to the Norfolk Admirals Sunday despite ten power play opportunities, including three in the final 3:27 of the game.

Norfolk opened the scoring on Pavel Vorobiev's sixth goal of the season 8:27 into the game off assists from Marty Wilford and Duncan Keith. The lead held up through the end of the first period, which the Sound Tigers played the majority of short two players with Alan Nasreddine serving 17 minutes in penalties for instigating a fight that followed a hit on teammate Ryan Kraft by the Admirals Quintin Laing. Kraft left the ice after the hit and did not return for the rest of the game.

The Sound Tigers tied the score at 1-1 with a power-play goal by Evan Cheverie off an assist from Eric Manlow with 5:52 left in the second period. The goal was Cheverie's first as a Sound Tiger and was scored on the back end of a five-on-three advantage to snap a five-game, one-period, 0 for 26 drought on the power play. However, Norfolk regained the lead at 2-1 just 1:38 later on Igor Radulov's third goal of the year off an assist from Vorobiev.

The Admirals took the largest lead of the contest at 3-1 on Matt Keith's eighth goal of the season off assists from Carsen Germyn and Matt Ellison 9:23 into the third period, but the Sound Tigers pulled to within 3-2 on another power-play goal by Cheverie, his second of the game and of the year, off assists from Manlow and Rob Collins with 6:06 left in the game.

With Vorobiev already off for hooking at 16:33, Referee Dan O'Rourke whistled Ellison for roughing then unsportsmanlike conduct and a ten-minute misconduct at 17:44 giving the Sound Tigers a five-on-three advantage. The Sound Tigers also pulled Goaltender Dieter Kochan inside the final minute of play but could not tie the game. They finished the contest 2 for 10 on the power play while Norfolk was 0 for 4.

Vorobiev was the first star of the game, Cheverie the second, and Keith the third. Admirals Netminder Craig Anderson made 12 saves to earn the win while Kochan made 23 in a losing effort as the Sound Tigers were outshot 26-14.

The Sound Tigers will continue the stretch of six straight road games and eight of ten away from home when they visit the Providence Bruins next Friday at 7:05 p.m. and the Hershey Bears next Saturday at 7 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on 600 WICC-AM and at www.soundtigers.com. They will finish the stretch when they play the Albany River Rats; at the home of their NHL affiliate, the New Jersey Devils; on Thursday, January 22nd and the Philadelphia Phantoms on Friday, January 23rd. The Sound Tigers ‚¬â„¢ next home game will be Saturday, January 24th when they host Albany at 7:05 p.m.
