Wilson's Late Goal pulls Falcons into Tie

Springfield, MA â Defenseman Mike Wilson scored with 41 seconds remaining in regulation as the Falcons skated to a 2-2 tie with the Providence Bruins before a crowd of 3,840 at the Springfield Civic Center on Saturday night. Goaltender Jean-Marc Pelletier turned aside 34 of 36 shots for Springfield. Providence forward Brendan Walsh scored both goals for the Bruins while netminder Hannu Toivonen made 42 saves. The Falcons have gained points in five of their last six games (3-1-1-1).
After a scoreless first period, Falcons center Erik Westrum netted a power-play goal with 5:08 remaining in the second frame to give Springfield a 1-0 lead. Westrum lifted a shot over the shoulder of Toivonen from the right wing face-off circle after receiving a pass from Billy Tibbetts, who was set up at the left point. The goal was Westrum's ninth of the season while Tibbetts collected his first point with Springfield by registering the assist.
The P-Bruins vaulted to a 2-1 lead after Walsh scored twice over a span of 3:10 early in the third period. Walsh put back the rebound of a shot by center Matt Herr from the top of the crease for the go-ahead goal 7:22 into the final frame.
However, a night after the Falcons surrendered the game-tying goal while the Philadelphia Phantoms skated with an extra attacker, Wilson scored an equalizing tally for Springfield while an extra skater was on the ice in place of Pelletier. The blueliner's shot from near the left wing boards eluded Toivonen at the 19:19 mark to send the game to overtime. The marker was Wilson's second in two games and third of the season.
The Falcons registered two shots and Providence put three shots on net during the scoreless overtime period.
For the game, Springfield outshot the Bruins, 44-36. The 44 shots were the second-most that the Falcons have posted this season.
The Falcons will visit the Worcester IceCats on Wednesday before returning to the home ice of the Civic Center for a pair of games next weekend. Springfield will host the IceCats on Friday and the Lowell Lock Monsters next Saturday. Game time for both games is 7:35 pm.
