Emery and Giroux Earns Senators 2-2 Tie with Bears

Ray Emery made a season-high 45 saves and Alexandre Giroux netted both Binghamton goals as the Senators battled back in salvaging a 2-2 tie at Hershey Sunday night in front of 6,509 fans at Giant Center.
Eric Perrin opened the scoring 11:42 into the game as the Bears skated with a 5x3 advantage following consecutive penalties 17 second apart to Christoph Schubert (hooking â 11:03) and Steve Bancroft (cross checking â 11:20).
Steve Brule spotted Perrin at the left post and wired a feed through the slot. Perrin one-timed it past Emery for his team-leading 15th of the year for a 1-0 lead.
Perrin made it 2-0 after wading through a sea of bodies in front of the Binghamton net to gain a shooting lane. From the deep slot, Perrin sent a steep backhander over Emery's glove hand and under the crossbar for a 2-0 advantage 11:38 into the second period.
Binghamton cut the Bears lead in half 59 seconds later as Giroux followed up on his own rebound for his 8th of the season at 12:37.
Tom Lawson (44 saves) stopped Giroux's original shot from the right wing, but couldn't smother the rebound as Giroux shoved the loose puck under Lawson's pad.
Giroux then netted the equalizer at 7:44 of the final period with the Sens operating their sixth power play.
Brooks Laich sent a wrister towards the net through traffic. The bouncing puck appeared to hit Brian McGrattan's skate, deflecting off of the post and was loose on the goal line before Giroux tapped it in to tie the contest at 2-2.
The clubs would go scoreless in the remaining 12:16 of regulation although it looked like Binghamton pulled out the win as the final horn sounded.
Laich skated down the left wing in the closing seconds and sent a shot around Lawson as Laich was pulled down from behind as time expired.
Referee Dave Hansen immediately waved of the goal after a brief protest by the Senators.
The clubs headed to overtime for the second time in as many meetings this year (3-2 Hershey on October 24th) and the wide open extra period provided both sides with opportunity to pick up the extra point in the standings.
The Bears had the best of the chances, but Emery claimed top star honors in making seven of his 45 saves in overtime.
The best came with two minutes left and Hershey breaking in on a 2-on-1 rush. Brule looked to bury a Perrin centering feed, but Emery slid across and squared up perfectly to deny the Bears the win with a chest pad stop.
With the point, Binghamton maintained a share of fifth place with Norfolk, who defeated Bridgeport earlier in the day 3-2. The Sens and the Admirals have 38 points each with Binghamton holding five games in hand over Norfolk. Both clubs moved to within four points of idle Wilkes-Barre in fourth place.
