Sound Tigers Lose 3-1 In Albany

ALBANY, NY - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 3-1 on the road to the Albany River Rats Sunday evening. It was the second time the Sound Tigers lost by that score on the road in as many days after falling 3-1 to the Binghamton Senators on Saturday.

Joe Hulbig gave Albany a 1-0 lead with his 17th goal of the season off assists from Craig Darby and Steve Kariya 8:55 into the game. Hulbig scored on the first power play of the contest. The River Rats doubled their lead to 2-0 on Kariya's 13th goal of the year off assists from Darby and Matt DeMarchi 5:45 into the middle frame.

The Sound Tigers stayed within two goals of Albany despite a full two-minute two-man shorthanded situation when Referee Francois St. Laurent tagged them with a bench minor for delay of game on the face-off at the start of cross checking minor to Steve Munn.

The Sound Tigers pulled to within 2-1 with 2:53 left in regulation as Steve Webb scored his first goal with the team, his fifth of the season, off assists from Kevin Colley and Cole Jarrett.

The Sound Tigers called timeout and pulled Goaltender Wade Dubielewicz in favor of an extra attacker with 1:01 left to play, but Steve Guolla scored an empty-net goal, his first marker of the year, off assists from Darby and Mike Matteucci with 22.6 seconds left to play to give Albany the 3-1 victory.

Darby was the first star of the game with three assists, River Rats Netminder Ari Ahonen was the second star with 22 saves, and Kariya the third. The Sound Tigers were 0 for 3 on the power play while Albany was 1 for 4 and had a 32-23 shots on goal advantage. Dubielewicz had 29 saves in a losing effort.

The Sound Tigers will play the final three games of seven straight on the road when they visit the Philadelphia Phantoms next Friday and the Norfolk Admirals next Saturday and Sunday. The Sound Tigers' next home game will be on Wednesday, March 31st when they host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at 7:05 p.m.
