Hershey Bears News Release
The BEARS won 5-0 against the Penguins Sunday night in a game that included 227 minutes worth of penalties and eight different fights. The two teams meet again Friday at Wachovia Arena in another crucial East Division game. HERSHEY climbed back within two points of third place with the victory.
HERSHEY scored two goals in the second period to take the lead as Shane Willis and Cody McCormick tallied markers for the home team. The BEARS poured it on with three goals in the third by Sheldon Keefe, Steve Brule and Dennis Bonvie before a melee broke out between the teams late in the third period. The 227 minutes of penalties is far and away a new season high for penalty minutes in a game involving the BEARS. The old season mark was 118 minutes of penalties at Lowell on March 7th. Among the penalties were 39 minor penalties, six misconducts, and 16 fighting majors. The two goaltenders, Phil Sauve and Andy Chiodo met at center ice but never fought. Both goaltenders received two minute penalties for leaving the crease.
Sheldon Keefe was named the game's number one star for scoring a goal and assisting on two others. Dennis Bonvie notched the "Gordie Howe Hat Trick" by scoring a goal, adding an assist and getting into a fight. Shane Willis scored the game-winner by scoring his 24th of the season in the second period.
HERSHEY plays at Wilkes-Barre Friday night to begin a stretch of six of seven on the road. Face-off Friday night is at 7:05 p.m.
