
Sound Tigers Eliminated By B-Sens

BRIDGEPORT, CT â The American Hockey League's 2001-02 Regular Season Champion and Eastern Conference Playoff Champion Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 2-1 at home to the Binghamton Senators in game six of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals Monday. With the loss, the Sound Tigers were eliminated four games to two by Binghamton who now advances to the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals to face the winner of the series between the regular-season champion Hamilton Bulldogs and the Manitoba Moose. The Senators' win was the first by the road team in any of the six games in the series.
Josh Langfeld, who scored the game-winning first goal of the game on the power play Saturday in Binghamton, opened the scoring Monday with his fourth goal of the playoffs 3:21 into the game on assists from Joe Murphy and Bob Wren.
The Senators doubled their lead to 2-0 on Chris Kelly's second goal of the postseason, and in as many games, with 5:48 left in the third period on an assist from Dennis Bonvie who upped a scoring streak to three games on the play. However, the Sound Tigers pulled to within 2-1 just :44 later on Ray Schultz's first goal of the playoffs on assists from Martin Chabada and Justin Papineau.
After a series full of special teams and penalties, including 225 minutes in game three alone, the teams combined for just four penalties and two power plays Monday, but Binghamton went on their only advantage of the game with 1:59 left in regulation. The Sound Tigers then pulled Goaltender Rick DiPietro in favor of an extra attacker, evening the strength at five skaters apiece, but were unable to tie the game.
Binghamton Goaltender Ray Emery made 34 saves to earn the first star of the game. Kelly was the second star of the game. Schultz was the third star of the game. Both teams were 0 for 1 on the power play while the Sound Tigers had a 35-19 shots on goal advantage.
