Syracuse, NY- The Syracuse Crunch suffered a 7-2 loss at the hands of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers tonight at Webster Bank Arena.
The Bridgeport special team units scored three power-play and one shorthanded goal to help lift the Sound Tigers over the Crunch who fall to 14-6-1-2 overall and 10-3-0-2 on the road. While the Sound Tigers went three for five on the man-advantage, the Crunch failed to score on five power play attempts.
Bridgeport took a 3-0 lead into the locker room after the first 20 minutes of play thanks to goals from Casey Cizikas, Jon Landry and Johan Sundstrom.
Cizikas put the Sound Tigers up 1-0 beating Crunch netminder Riku Helenius on a shorthanded breakaway 1:41 into the game. Landry added a five-on-three power-play goal at the 12:34 mark. Helenius partially blocked Landry's blast but the puck trickled over the goal line for a 2-0 Bridgeport lead. Sundstrom scored at even strength on the tail end of Bridgeport's third power play of the first period.
The Sound Tigers added another three goals in the middle stanza, starting just 36 seconds into the period. Colin McDonald collected his own rebound and pushed it past Helenius, who was replaced by Dustin Tokarski following the goal. Helenius allowed four goals on 13 shots.
Tokarski allowed his first goal with 8:45 remaining in the second period; Brock Nelson one-timed the puck past Tokarski to put the Sound Tigers up 5-0 with their second power-play goal of the night. Tokarski went on to stop 10 of 13 shots he faced.
The Crunch offense struck 1:06 apart to cut the Sound Tigers lead to three goals. Alex Killorn one-timed a long pass from Angelidis past Sound Tiger netminder Anders Nilsson at the 15:37 mark and JT Brown followed with a wrist shot from the right circle at the 16:33 mark.
John Persson made it 6-2 Bridgeport with 1:04 to play in the second period after Tokarski was found out of position after colliding with a Crunch defenseman.
McDonald scored his second of the game and third Sound Tiger power-play goal at the 12:35 mark of the final frame for a final score of 7-2.
Crunchables: Five goals is the largest margin of defeat for the Crunch this season...An assist for Angelidis on Killorn's goal was his first point since Nov. 9 vs. Hamilton at the Bell Centre...In their last three games the Crunch are 2 for 21on the power play.
