Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI -- The Providence Bruins defeated the Adirondack Phantoms this afternoon 3-2 in overtime at the Dunkin' Donuts Center for their first victorious three game weekend this season. Jamie Tardif tallied two goals in regulation and Kyle MacKinnon got the game winner in overtime. Niklas Svedberg made 24 saves for the win. The Bruins are now 5-0-0-1 over their last six contests, improving to a 12-8-0-2 record and are now one point out of first in the Atlantic Division.
The P-Bruins put the pressure on the Phantoms from the moment the puck dropped giving the away team only one chance for a shot on goal through almost nine minutes of play while putting up nine themselves. While Providence dominated in shots, they struggled offensively as they were unable to convert on two power plays they had through the first half of the period. The effort was not for nothing as with just under five minutes to go Tardif rushed down the right wing and took a shot from the right faceoff circle that went right over Scott Munroe's shoulder to give Providence a 1-0 lead for the remainder of the period. The opening goal would be Tardif's 101st career goal.
Adirondack came into the second period looking to turn things around and did so quickly. Providence could not keep up with a rush from Adirondack and Harry Zolnierczyk beat Svedberg on his team's eighth shot of the game. The P-Bruins buckled down on their defense after the goal continued to limit any pucks on net from the Phantoms including Zach Trotman laying out in front of the net to block a shot when Svedberg was still in position on the other side of the net. The P-Bruins had their fourth power play opportunity late in the period and it did not take long for them to use it to their advantage to tie the game. Ryan Spooner took a shot from the right faceoff circle that was stopped but Tardif knocked in the rebound for his second goal of the game to give the P-Bruins the lead. Chris Bourque had the other assist on go ahead goal. The goal would also be his tenth of the season and makes him the first P-Bruin to reach that milestone this season. Providence held Adirondack to only six shots on the period while they put up 22 to give them a 38-13 shot advantage as the second period came to a close.
The third period got chippy and the Phantoms turned up their offense almost matching their two period total through 20 minutes. Despite a strong kill throughout the game, Adirondack tied up the game on their fourth power play chance of the game at 14:38. Both teams would get another shot at putting their team ahead on the power play but the score would remain 2-2 after regulation.
Providence did not need long in over time to as just a minute and ten seconds in MacKinnon came down the middle with speed and beat Munroe blocker side on the only shot of over time. The goal would be MacKinnon's third in just as many games as he got his first two of the season Friday against the Monarchs. Matt Bartkowski had the primary assist and Bourque had the secondary assist making this his fourth two-point game of the season.
The P-Bruins return to the Dunk on Friday, December 14th for backpack night against the Springfield Falcons. The P-Bruins' complete season schedule can be found on www.providencebruins.com .
