Portland Pirates News Release
Portland, ME - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers (16-9-1-0) scored three unanswered goals in the third period to overtake the Portland Pirates (10-11-1-0) by a score of 3-1 at the Cross Insurance Arena on Friday night.
The Pirates Chase Balisy attempted to open the scoring when a Kyle Rau shot deflected off of him and into the Sound Tigers' net, but the referee Jake Brenk waved off the goal, ruling that the puck was knocked into the net illegally by Balisy with a hand.
Rocco Grimaldi finally broke the deadlock at 6:16 of the second period when he notched his fifth goal of the season. Cameron Gaunce dished the cross-ice pass to Grimaldi, whose slapper found the back of the net. Rob Schremp also assisted on the 5-on-3 power play goal.
The wheels came off in the third period though, with the Sound Tigers scoring three goals in a row.
Taylor Beck picked the top right corner on Sam Brittain with 8:54 remaining in regulation. Beck's power play goal was set up by Bracken Kearns and Jesse Graham.
Beck would strike again just minutes later. He skated around traffic and across the crease to flip the backhanded shot in past Brittain for the 2-1 Bridgeport lead. James Wright grabbed an assist on the play with 3:59 left.
Justin Vaive solidified the win, burying a partial breakaway with 1:53 to go. Graham notched his second assist of the game on the play.
A penalty-filled game ended with both teams going 1-for-7 on the power play. Brittain made 22 saves in a losing effort bringing the Gorham Savings Bank Saves for Charity total to $2,490 so far this season. His record is now 4-4-0 on the season. Chris Gibson got the win in goal for Bridgeport, stopping 27 shots to improve to 10-4-1.
The Pirates host Star Wars Night against the Providence Bruins on Saturday, December 12, at 7:00 p.m. The home stand concludes on Wednesday, December 16 at 7:00 p.m. against the Springfield Falcons. To get tickets for all four games, call us at 207-PIRATES!
