Sound Tigers Assistant Coach Named

After spending three seasons as the power skating and skill development coach for the Sound Tigers, Bernie Cassell was recently been named an assistant coach for the upcoming season.

The 37-year-old was an assistant coach at the 2003 Islanders Prospects Camp and coached the Norwich Icebreakers Junior B team from 2001-06. Cassell worked as a graduate assistant and full-time assistant coach for the Connecticut College hockey team while earning his Master's Degree in Education from 1996-2000.

Cassell played two seasons of professional hockey for the American Hockey Association's Fargo-Moorhead Express, the Sunshine Hockey League's Jacksonville Bullets and the Colonial Hockey League's St. Thomas Wildcats.

He had a standout collegiate career at Elmira in which he set the school's all-time record for goals in a season with 43 in 1992. The ECAC All-Star and NCAA All-American Selection compiled 100 goals and 100 assists for 200 points during his four year career at Elmira.

The Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the New York Islanders, play their first home game Friday, Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m. against the Hartford Wolf Pack. For ticket information, including group discounts, call 334-GOAL or visit soundtigers.com.
