LAKEWOOD â Several members of the HBO hit series, "The Sopranos" will join hundreds of area residents to raise funds for local patient services and help find a cure for what is commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease by participating in the second annual Seaside Board...Walk To D'feet ALS on Saturday, May 22.
Registration is now being accepted for the event, which will get underway at 10 a.m. in Seaside Heights, at Hiering Avenue and the Boardwalk. The walkers will follow a three-mile route along the Seaside Heights and Seaside Park Boardwalks.
All money raised from the event will support ALS research and services provided free of charge to ALS patients and families throughout Ocean and Monmouth Counties, including in-home care, clinics, equipment, technology, recreational programs and nursing visits.
Corporate sponsors include Pacific Fruit, Inc., Wakefern ShopRite, Neutrik USA, Inc. and the Lakewood BlueClaws.
"Those who have fun walking along the route or make a contribution will help people like me live with ALS," notes event co-organizer Cathi Reiman of Beachwood, who was diagnosed with the neuromuscular disease in 1999.
Joining her as this year's event organizers are husband Bill Reiman, plus friends Kevin and Elaine Conheeney of Point Pleasant Beach.
The organizers hope to increase the level of contributions by 10 percent over the inaugural year, when almost $55,000 was raised to help strike out a fatal disease that usually afflicts people in their prime.
To register for the May 22 Seaside Walk or receive information about putting together a team of walkers to help fight Lou Gehrig's Disease, contact the local chapter of the ALS Association at 1-877-GEHRIG 1, or visit the organization's website at www.alsphiladelphia.org.
A progressive, motor-neuron disease, ALS usually strikes both men and women between the ages of 30 and 75. Once thought to be rare, ALS occurs nearly as often as multiple sclerosis. Every 90 minutes, someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with ALS, for which the cause and cure are unknown.
