Lake County Captains News Release
(Eastlake, OH) â Kevin Kouzmanoff blasted a two-out home run in the bottom of the 12th to send the Lake County Captains to a 3-2 victory over the defending South Atlantic League Champion Rome Braves on Friday night at Eastlake Ballpark.
It was Kouzmanoff's fourth home run on the season, and it gave the Captains their fourth win in five games during the current eight-game homestand.
Lake County trailed by one run going into the ninth, but tied it on a one-out, two strike sacrifice fly from left fielder Mike Conroy. Ricardo Rojas scored the run after pinch-running for Javier Herrera, who reached to start the inning with a walk. Rojas stole second and then skated to third on an errant throw from Rome catcher Saltalamacchia.
Brad Snyder got the Captains on the board in the first when he blasted a home run to center, his fourth in 55 at-bats this season.
The home run remained the difference until the top of the 7th, when Rome notched a run on an RBI single by Scott Schade, then got another from designated hitter Steve Pyzik, who knocked in Matt Esquivel on a fielder's choice to give the Braves a 2-1 lead.
Rome threatened again in the eighth with two men aboard, but Ryan Mulhern made a diving stop on a sharp grounder from first-round pick Jarrod Saltalamacchia to keep the Captains deficit at one run.
Jim Ed Warden (1-0) worked a scoreless 12th to earn the win, while Brad Nelson (0-1) took the loss after surrendering the home run to Kouzmanoff.
Action resumes Saturday afternoon at 2:05 PM at Eastlake Ballpark with Rafael Perez (0-2) on the hill for Lake County against Stephen Russell (0-3) of Rome.
