BIRMINGHAM - Montgomery Biscuits ace Andy Sonnanstine pitched eight scoreless innings at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium Wednesday, carrying his club to a 2-0 win over the Birmingham Barons in the series opener.

Sonnanstine (2-3) walked three for the first time in 25 starts, but he kept the Barons from scoring, even when he faced adversity in the sixth inning.

With a 2-0 lead in that inning, Sonnanstine allowed a leadoff double and an error by Johnny Raburn allowed the potential tying runs to reach first and third. But the 23-year-old righty induced a pop fly from Corey Smith, struck out Micah Schnurstein and retired Rob Sasser on a fly ball.

He allowed only four hits in his outing and threw 95 pitches, earning his second victory of the season.

Birmingham starting pitcher Ray Liotta (1-5) allowed at least one hit in each of his seven innings but allowed both Biscuits runs early. In the first, Jason Pridie hit a two-out ground ball over the first base bag for a double and scored from second on a seeing-eye single by Michael Coleman. Pridie's slide toward the back half of home plate averted the tag by catcher Cole Armstrong, who had received the throw from left fielder Ricardo Nanita as Pridie approached.

Raburn drilled his first Biscuits hit of 2006 over Nanita's head two innings later, scoring Elliot Johnson from third base.

Brian Henderson closed out the game with a perfect ninth inning and earned his second save.

The Biscuits (24-16) retain first place in the South Division and move to eight games above .500 for the second time this season. Their previous all-time high had been seven games above, when the club started the 2005 season 7-0.

Thursday's game features the matchup of Birmingham righty Lance Broadway (), the league's ERA leader, and Montgomery right hander Tony Peguero (), second in the ERA race. Gametime is 7:05 p.m.
