Lancaster Stormers News Release
For the ninth time in two seasons, the Somerset Patriots reached double figures at Clipper Magazine Stadium, downing the Lancaster Barnstormers, 11-6, in front of 7,323 Friday evening.
The loss ended a four-game upswing for the Barnstormers, whose lead over Atlantic City in the Southern Division dropped to 3 ? games. Somerset climbed to within four.
Jeff Nettles launched two home runs, and Larry Barnes added a grand slam in the Patriots victory. Nettles pair of blasts to left provided Somerset with its only runs in the first three innings to build a 3-1 lead.
Lancaster would take its only lead of the night in the bottom of the third. Reggie Taylor started the rally with a double down the left field line. Danny Gonzalez moved him to third with a single to center. Jutt Hileman struck out, but Jose Ortiz followed with his third homer in two nights and fifth in six games, a fly ball lofted into the picnic deck, as the Barnstormers went on top, 4-3.
Scott Sobkowiak (7-2) held the lead until a disastrous sixth inning. Edgard Clemente stung a double inside the third base bag and scored the tying when Travis Anderson punched a double over the head of first baseman Jeremy Todd. George Sandel laid a bunt down the third base line that paralyzed the Lancaster defense, putting runners at the corners. Fernando Lunar chased Sobkowiak with a ground single to left.
Ross Peeples came on for his third appearance since his return from Tommy John surgery. He got Kevin Nicholson to fly out to right field for the first out but walked Henri Stanley to load the bases. Barnes hit his second grand slam of the season at Clipper, a drive clearing the tents in right as Somerset increased its cushion to five.
Lancaster partially recovered with two runs in the seventh. Reggie Taylor reached when a third strike got to the backstop and raced to third on a single off the right field wall by Danny Gonzalez. Hileman delivered one run with a sacrifice fly to center, and Ortiz knocked in his fourth of the night with a long double to left center as Lancaster climbed to within three. Keith Maxwell drew a walk from Saul Solveson, the second pitcher of the inning and fourth of the night used by the Patriots. Solveson then got Todd to ground to second on a 3-2 pitch ending the threat. The Barnstormers never again put a scare into the Patriots.
Jeff Urban (2-1) worked three scoreless innings for the win in relief.
