
Bears' rally falls short to Bluefish

NEWARK, NJ - The Newark Bears dropped the first game of a three-game series against the Bridgeport Bluefish 7-6 Friday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Despite the loss, the Bears remain in second place of the North Division with a 13-12 record.
With the game tied at 1 entering the top of the third inning, the Bluefish plated five runs to jump out to a 6-1 lead. Catcher Jamie Pogue and third baseman Bryant Nelson each had two-run singles, and second baseman Steve Hine added an RBI single.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the fourth when right-fielder Al Benjamin doubled to score first baseman Alexis Hernandez. Three batters later second baseman Matt Brunson belted a three-run home run over the left field wall cutting the lead to 6-5. It was his first of the season.
After Pogue's RBI single in the top of the seventh gave Bridgeport a 7-5 lead, Bears left fielder Jose Herrera scored in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single by third baseman Victor Rodriguez, however Bluefish closer Eddy Ramos closed the door to earn his 13th save of the season.
Rodriguez and Hernandez each had three hits for the Bears, while Brunson went 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored. Pogue led the Bluefish offensively going 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI.
Bears closer David Shepard (4-11) took the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits in 2 2/3 innings pitched, while Mike Porzio (6-5) earned the victory pitching 5 1/3 innings allowing five runs on eight hits.
The Bears and Bluefish will play game two of the three-game series Saturday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 pm. Joe Gannon (5-6) will make his 18th appearance this season for the Bears. Gates open at 5:05 pm to Mascot Night on Rip âN Ruppert's birthday featuring a Ruppert bobblehead giveaway presented by Haberman Building Corporation to the first 750 children (14 and under) and the third annual pre-game Mascot Dodgeball Game.
