Bristol State Liners News Release

The Bristol Pirates started off their six-game road trip with a loss on Friday night, as they dropped the series opener 10-6 to the Elizabethton Twins.

Shortstop Jesus Valdez drove in the first runs of the game for Bristol on a double to left in the second inning to make it a 2-0 game. First baseman Samuel Inoa scored on a fielding error to make it a 3-0 game, but the Twins scored twice in the bottom of the inning on a passed ball and a wild pitch to cut the Pirates' lead to one. Inoa would hit a two-run single in the top of the third to extend Bristol's lead to 5-2, but the Twins added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it a one-run game once again.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Twins second baseman Charles Mack launched a three-run home run to put Elizabethton on top 7-5. Elizabethton extended their lead to five runs in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single and a two-run home run by third baseman Seth Gray to make it a 10-5 game. Catcher Ethan Goforth hit his second career home run in the top of the eighth inning, but the Pirates would get only one more base runner before the end of the game.

Starter Luis Ortiz allowed four runs -- one earned -- over four innings on four hits and three walks while striking out two. Enrique Santana took the loss after allowing three runs on one hit and one walk over one inning, while Lizardy Dicent also allowed three runs on three hits and one walk over two innings. Luis Arrieta was the only Pirates pitcher with a scoreless appearance in the loss, tossing a perfect inning of relief with one strikeout.

Third baseman Matt Morrow and designated hitter Jake Snider led the Pirates with three hits each, while Morrow also recorded a double and two runs scored. Valdez, Inoa and Goforth each went 2-for-4 with a run scored in the loss, with Valdez leading the team with two RBI while Inoa and Goforth both finished with one RBI.

The Pirates (19-22) fell to 2 1/2 games behind the Twins and 4 1/2 games behind the Johnson City Cardinals in the Appalachian League West Division with the loss. They will look to even up the series in Game 2 on Saturday night, as the Pirates need one more win against the Twins to secure their first winning season against Elizabethton in more than a decade.
