Boise Hawks News Release

KEIZER, Ore. - Ben Wells and Kyler Burke combined to not allow an earned run and the Boise Hawks clubbed three home runs, keeping their playoff hopes alive, with a 9-2 victory over the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes at Volcanoes Stadium.

The win for Boise secured their first road series win at S-K since 2002 and pulled the team even with Spokane in the East Division overall standings with a 32-39 record - two games ahead of Yakima. The second-place team in the East will earn a postseason berth if Tri-City wins the second half, with the Dust Devils currently holding a one-game lead on Yakima with five games to play.

After spotting the Volcanoes a pair of unearned runs in the first, the Hawks scored nine unanswered runs - tying the game in the third, thanks to aleadoff homer by Oliver Zapata and a wild pitch that scored Pin-Chieh Chen. Chen would give Boise the lead for good in the fourth with an RBI single - then watch as S-K ran themselves out of the fifth, as Mike Murray was thrown out at second over-running the ball by Reggie Golden, before Joe Panik could score on a Brett Krill single.

Golden would push the margin to 5-2 with a two-run homer in the sixth, ending an 0-for-23 slump, while Paul Hoilman hit his league-leading 15th homer in the ninth, one homer off Russ Canzler's franchise record set in 2006.

Wells was outstanding, going five and two-third innings, striking out five, to pick up his fourth win, while Burke got the final 10 outs, fanning five, to notch his first professional save. Zapata, Chen, Hoilman, and Wes Darvill each had two hits for the Hawks, who finished the road trip with a 4-7 record.

Kaohi Downing and Ben Thomas each had two hits in the loss for the Volcanoes.

Boise returns home after an off day tomorrow to begin a five-game series with Vancouver at Memorial Stadium - first pitch Tuesday through Friday at 6:45 p.m. The Hawks have not disclosed a starter for the series opener vs. the Canadians.
