Sobkow Snaps Losing Streak

Phil Sobkow gave the Calgary Vipers a solid start in their 7-3 victory over the Orange County Flyers at Goodwin Field in Fullerton, California. Sobkow (2-4) pitched six innings and gave up three runs on five hits while walking only one. In the first five innings Sobkow did not allow a run on only one hit while at one point retiring eight Flyers in a row. With the victory the Snakes spilt the double-header while also snapping a four game losing streak and improving to 15-17 on the second half of the season.

Calgary got on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning thanks to three straight two out singles. Jorge Tang started with a infield base hit, Travis Drader followed with his own single, and Kevin Price knocked in a run with a base knock for the 1-0 lead.

In the top of the third Carlos Duncan and Felix Jose singled and Colin Moro reached on a fielding error by third baseman David Keesee which also allowed Duncan to score. Tang made the score 3-0 with a run batted in infield single to score Jose.

The scoring continued in the top of the fourth frame with a Price single, Demond Smith sacrifice bunt, Darryl Brinkley infield single, and Duncan RBI base hit. After Moro was hit bit a pitch to load the bases Jorge Mejia wiped the sacks clean as he reached on another error by Keesee which also allowed three runs to score for the 7-0 advantage.

Josh Arhart hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning to get Orange County into the runs column. Travon Jackson followed with a triple, David Bacani singled for a RBI, Patrick Breen walked, and Jeff LaRue knocked in a run with a base hit to make the score 7-3.

P.J. Bevis tossed a scoreless seventh inning for Calgary while Bob Cramer (7-3) picked up the rare loss for the Flyers.

Calgary returns home Monday August 18th at 7:05 PM (MDT) to open up a nine game home stand against Hall of Famer Gary Carter and his first half South Division Champion Orange County Flyers.
