Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO, CA - The Yuma Scorpions retained sole possession of first place in the Golden Baseball League's South Division second half race, using a 12-hit attack and a big five run 6th inning to beat the Chico Outlaws 10-2 Friday night in the opener of a three game series at Nettleton Stadium...the Scorpions snapping the Outlaws four game winning streak.
Yuma led the entire contest, getting on the board in the 2nd inning when Yosvany Almario walked, stole second, went to third on a throwing error by Outlaws catcher Matt Ceriani and scored on a Jose Rodriguez groundout. In the 3rd a wild pickoff throw by Chico starting pitcher Eric Sheridan put two runners in scoring position...Dionys Cesar and Henry Calderson coming home on groundouts by Rich Janeway and Maikel Jova to make it 3-0 Scorpions. Chico made it a 3-1 game in the bottom of the 3rd when Jesse Kovacs walked, was doubled to third by Ceriani and scored on an Eric Pringle groundout...but in the 5th Yuma went up 5-1 when Rich Janeway bombed his 11th homer of the year with a man aboard.
The Scorpions batted around in the 6th, chasing Sheridan and effectively putting the game away. Calderon's bases-loaded fielder's choice grounder plated A.J. Valentine...then following a walk to Janeway, Jova's groundout to first chased home Ryan Barba to make the score 7-1. Almario delivered a two-run single to left and scored when Jose Rodriguez doubled to the right field gap, pushing the lead to 10-1. The Outlaws plated one more run in the 8th when a bases-loaded walk to Gabe Riley forced home Ceriani...but Jean Carlos Guillen came in from the Scorpions bullpen to retire Chico in order in the 9th to lock down Yuma's sixth victory over the Outlaws in seven tries this season.
Yuma starter Evan White (6-3) allowed just a run on four hits over seven innings to pick up the win; Sheridan (3-2 with Chico, 4-4 overall) was tagged with the loss. Four different Scorpions - Janeway, Rodriguez, Barba and Hector Bernal - had two hits on the night...the Outlaws had just six hits, with Ceriani going 2-for-3. Friday's loss dropped Chico to 13-17 in the second half and 28-44 overall...Yuma improved to 16-12 in the second half and 40-31 for the year. Game two of the series is set for Saturday, and it'll be a battle of lefties as Scott Navarro (2-4) gets the start for the Outlaws; the Scorpions will counter with Mike Megrew (0-1). Game time is 7:05pm; hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
