Jacksonville, FL --- Ryan Snare pitched seven shutout innings, while Chip Ambres hit his second homer of the series as Carolina blanked the Jacksonville Suns 4-0 Sunday afternoon before 5,785 at the Grounds of Jacksonville.

Snare (W, 2-0, 7IP, 5H, 0R, 1W, 7K), who won his second consecutive start, fanned a season-high seven batters and only allowed one Suns hitter to reach third base.

Carolina (21-9), which managed a split of the four-game series despite losing the first two games, kept its 1 1/2 game Eastern Division lead over the Tennessee Smokies.

The Suns (16-14) fell five games off the pace with the loss, taken by starter Eric Stults (L, 2-3). Stults allowed a solo homer to Ambres (HR, 5, 1-4, R, RBI) in the second inning.

Chris Aguila (2-3, R, RBI, SF) drove in Snare from third on a sacrifice fly in the third inning after Snare reached on a bunt single. Josh Wilson (1-4, RBI) singled home Wilson Valdez (2-4, R, S, 2SB) in the fifth with two outs. Valdez had singled and stolen his second base of the game.

In the sixth, a grounder by Chris Ashby (0-4, RBI) scored Aguila from third to make it 4-0.

Ryan Baker (ND, 2IP, 2H, 0R, 4K) worked the final two innings, allowing two hits and striking out four.

Carolina travels to Orlando to take on the Rays (10-20) in a four-game series which begins Tuesday night at 7:05 PM ET. Todd Moser (0-1, 3.00) starts the opener against Rays RH Jose Veras (0-3, 3.14) at Cracker Jack Stadium.

Notes: With the split in Jacksonville, Carolina avoided its second series loss of the season. The Mudcats have won five series, split one and been defeated 3-1 by Greenville in 2003..... Valdez stole two bases Sunday, giving his a Southern League best 12.... Miguel Cabrera singled in the sixth and eighth inning to extend his hitting streak to 12, and raise his league-best average to .419....Snare went 1-3 at the plate, but bunted all three at-bats during Sunday's game. A sore right shoulder prevented Snare from taking any full swings... For the second time in four days, there was another incident involving the Mudcats and Jacksonville fans. Following the game, a Jacksonville fan allegedly tossed a drink on Mudcats manager Tracy Woodson. At the time, hundreds of children were filing down the staircase toward the field to run the bases after the game ended. Several Mudcats players pointed out a fan to Suns front office personnel as well as security. An incensed Woodson held a heated discussion with Suns General Manager Pedro Bragan Jr. about the altercation. On Thursday, a group of rowdy Suns fans taunted the Mudcats near the dugout during the seventh inning of that game, which resulted in the game being delayed by five minutes until security gained control. The Mudcats have two more regular-season series in Jacksonville, including a four-game set May 23-26.
